Muncie man charged with DWI in crash that seriously injured woman

NEW CASTLE, Ind. — A Muncie man faces felony charges over his alleged role in a car wreck that seriously injured a woman.

Jaydin Lawrence Young, 20, is charged in Henry Circuit Court 2 with causing serious bodily injury while driving while intoxicated, a Level 5 felony carrying up to six years in prison, and criminal recklessness, a Level 6 felony with a maximum 30-month sentence.

According to an affidavit, Young was drunk on April 14 when his Chevrolet Cruze struck the woman's Mazda 6 s, which then went into a field in the 900 block of East U.S. 36 and overturned.

The victim, described as being in "extreme pain" by Henry County sheriff's deputies, reported she had been ejected from her vehicle. She was reported to have suffered multiple injuries, and was taken by ambulance to Henry County Hospital.

Young and the woman were reported to have earlier had an altercation in a park in Mount Summit.

According to an affidavit, the woman said during that incident, Young struck her face and tried to take her cellphone.

Later, as they traveled east on U.S. 36 in separate vehicles, Young told a deputy, he "pulled to the left lane and hit the brake real hard and was wanting (the woman) to pass to the right."

"I advised Jaydin that U.S. 36 is a two-lane, two-way road and for her to pass on the right did not make any sense," the deputy wrote.

A deputy reported Young smelled of an alcoholic beverage but denied he had been drinking.

According to an affidavit, a breath test measured his blood-alcohol content at 0.37. In Indiana, motorists with a BAC of 0.08 or higher are considered intoxicated.

Young was also charged with two misdemeanors: reckless driving and domestic battery,

The Muncie man has received a July 8 trial date on the Henry County charges.

On Feb. 15, Young pleaded guilty to an intimidation charge filed in August 2022 in Delaware Circuit Court 2. His sentencing in that case is set for June 10.
