mUSBfixer review

mUSBfixer not only formats USB drives but also recovers data by converting shortcut folders into actual folders you can open. A compact, efficient interface and clear instructions make mUSBfixer extremely easy to use.

Pros

Spartan layout: Less is more with mUSBfixer's user interface. A small, plain box holds File and Help menus, a drop-down list of available drives, and three buttons: Refresh, Format, and Recover.

Help menu: The Help menu includes contact and update resources as well as a link to Web-based instructions.

Fast and effective: Despite an initial hiccup (see below) mUSBfixer formatted a 3GB thumb drive more or less instantaneously.

Folder recovery: We appreciate mUSBfixer's ability to recover data from folders before reformatting.

Cons

Hiccups: We experienced some unhandled exceptions and other system warnings when we first tried to format a drive. We closed and reopened the app and ran the formatting tool again -- this time successfully.

Format options: The ability to select disc format would be nice, though perhaps the software only works with the default format, FAT32. The instructions describe clearly how to use mUSBfixer, but more detailed documentation is lacking.

Bottom Line

When write-protection stymies your efforts to reuse a USB thumb drive, mUSBfixer can help. Despite the initial issues, the software works quickly and effectively.
