Music Monday (11/10): This Week's New Albums + Videos

This week's new album releases

Each title listed below will go on sale beginning Monday, November 10 or Tuesday, November 11 unless otherwise indicated. (Most releases are out on Monday this week due to the Veterans Day holiday.)

...And You Will Know Us by the Trail of Dead
. IX LISTEN (Spotify)

As you may have guessed, IX is the ninth studio album from the Austin, Texas alt-rock outfit. It's also their first release since 2012's Lost Songs, which was perhaps the band's best album in a decade. While IX does not appear to reach those heights, it is still picking up fairly strong early reviews.

Azealia Banks
. Broke With Expensive Taste LISTEN (Spotify)

Originally expected to arrive in 2012, Azealia Banks's full-length studio debut has been on indefinite hold while the now-23-year-old rapper battled fellow artists, bloggers, and even her record label (Universal, with whom she parted ways this summer). That is, the album was on indefinite hold ... until last Thursday afternoon, when, without warning, it went on sale via digital retailers. The finished product includes 16 tracks and nearly as many producers (including AraabMuzik, Machinedrum, and Ariel Pink), plus a collaboration with Theophilus London.

Big K.R.I.T.
Cadillactica LISTEN (Spotify)

The rapper/producer follows 2012's strong Live from the Underground today with his second studio album. The lengthy guest roster includes Wiz Khalifa, Lupe Fiasco, E-40, and Raphael Saadiq.

Garth Brooks
Man Against Machine

The country mega-star (who has sold over 70 million albums since emerging on the scene in 1989) has a new record contract with RCA Nashville, and a new streaming music service, GhostTunes. But longtime fans should be especially pleased by the end of a 13-year-long recording hiatus. Man Against Machine is his first new album since 2001's Scarecrow, and it includes Brooks' recently released single "People Loving People."

Foo Fighters
. Sonic Highways LISTEN (Spotify)

Easily the best-promoted fall album release—heck, the LP even had its own HBO making-of series—Foo Fighters' eighth studio album finally arrives today. Produced by Butch Vig in analog, Sonic Highways is the result of an ambitious recording process that saw the band head to a different city to record each of the album's eight tracks. Along the way, Dave Grohl & co. enlisted an array of guest artists (representing the cities where the songs were recorded) that includes Joe Walsh, Gary Clark Jr., Zac Brown, Bad Brains, Ben Gibbard, the Preservation Hall Jazz Band, and members of Cheap Trick.

Parkay Quarts [Parquet Courts]
. Content Nausea LISTEN (CoS)

[Digital release today; CD release 2 December] The second release from indie garage-rock outfit Parquet Courts this year (after June's Sunbathing Animal) comes out, like last year's Tally All the Things That You Broke EP, under the band's alternate name of Parkay Quarts. Unlike the latter release, Content Nausea is a full-length album, but it seems to embrace the Parkay Quarts version of the band's more freewheeling, genre-hopping approach, and was recorded in just a few weeks to four-track tape. (The name change also reflects the fact that the band's two non-singing members were unavailable for most of the recording, leaving just the core duo of Andrew Savage and Austin Brown.) There's even a Nancy Sinatra cover, and, yes, it's the one you're thinking of.

Pink Floyd
. The Endless River LISTEN (Spotify)

Yes, this is indeed a new Pink Floyd album, of sorts. Coming 20 years after the band's "final" album (The Division Bell), The Endless River actually stems from those very same recording sessions, and thus features the band's then-lineup of David Gilmour, Nick Mason, and Richard Wright (who died six years ago). The new music—some originally intended for aborted album The Big Spliff—is chiefly instrumental (and even ambient), though it did gain some vocals as the band continued to tinker with it over the past year with producers Phil Manzanera and Youth. (In fact, some of those vocals come from Stephen Hawking.) This one really will be the band's final album, though Gilmour does have a solo LP due next year. Unfortunately, critics aren't finding a ton to like on River.

Damien Rice
. My Favourite Faded Fantasy LISTEN (Spotify)

The Irish singer-songwriter—now a resident of Iceland—hasn't released an album since 2006's 9 (which, despite that title, is his second album). That LP was a bit of a disappointment after his award-winning 2003 debut O, but this belated follow-up looks like a return to top form, as early reviews are strong. The eight-song set was produced by Rick Rubin.

Röyksopp
. The Inevitable End LISTEN (Spotify)

End will be just that for Röyksopp, in a way. The follow-up to this year's joint EP with Robyn—and the duo's first full-length since 2010's Senior—The Inevitable End will be Röyksopp's final LP release, though they may continue to release music in other (shorter) formats. Robyn appears on two tracks here, including a new version of their collaboration "Monument."

Lost on the River:
The New Basement Tapes LISTEN (Spotify)

What a month for (re)discovering old Bob Dylan material. Last week brought The Basement Tapes Complete box set, with over 130 tracks (many never before released) recorded by Dylan and The Band in 1967. This week's set features lyrics written by the astoundingly prolific Dylan at the same time as those Basement Tapes sessions, but never before set to music. Produced by T Bone Burnett, Lost On The River features performances by artists such as Elvis Costello, Jim James, and Marcus Mumford, though not Dylan himself. A documentary about the recording of this album, titled Lost Songs: The Basement Tapes Continued, will air on Showtime on November 21st at 9p, and you can watch several music videos from the special online now.
