    Must-see summer spots in San Francisco

    Looking for some of the must-see summer spots in San Francisco? It is handy to know places to take your friends when they come in from out of town. Plus, the idea of a stay-cation is more important than ever as the economy continues to sag.

    When it comes to being a tourist in your own town, what are the top picks that aren't the most obvious? This article lists a treasure trove of places everyone who lives in San Francisco must experience at least once.

    5. See the dolphins and dine at the beach

    Naturally, most of the year, it is too cold to hang out on the beach and tolerate the water. In a lot of ways, local dolphin populations feel the same way. For this reason, if the summer weather is nice, why not go to the beach for the chance to see dolphins playing in the waves?

    After a stop at Baker Beach and a hike to get a picture in front of the Golden Gate Bridge, stop by a restaurant with a view of the Pacific Ocean along the Great Highway. Top restaurants include the Beach Chalet and Sutro's at the Cliff House.

    4. Biking to the drive-in movies

    Summer outings to a drive-in movie are an American tradition as old as apple pie. Whether you go to the movies in a car, on public transportation, or on a bike, there are outdoor movies in the Bay Area that you can only see once a year.

    3. Sailing on the open sea

    In preparation for the SF America's Cup yacht race in 2013, a wealth of nautical opportunities abound in San Francisco with new gusto. Going out on the sea with your family on a memorable trip around the Bay is easy when you search Craigslist.org.

    2. Podcast tours at the SF Botanical Gardens

    This year, the world-renowned SF Botanical Gardens is charging patrons for admission. With their cheapest pass, two people can go to the gardens for one month for only $11. Regardless of the price, the staff wanted to ensure that the public was getting their money's worth.

    For this reason, new and improved features include podcast tours by Docent Ernie Ng. Exquisite plants and flowers that look their best in the heat make this a must-see summer spot.

    1. Summer bounty at farmer's markets

    If you want to impress out-of-town guests, take them to a local farmer's market in San Francisco. Each market has distinct sellers that make them stand out. For example, the Ferry Plaza Farmer's Market features gourmet baked items and jams from locals such as the Tell Tale Preserve Company.
