‘Mystery Science Theater 3000’ Raises $6.3M For 14-Episode Revival
The cult classic comedy series has raised enough money to create 14 new episodes. Including a Kickstarter campaign that raised $5.76 million, Mystery Science Theater 3000 mastermind Joel Hodgson and his supporters have raised $6.3 million.
MST3K‘s Kickstarter fundraising narrowly beat the previous crowd-sourcing champ, the Veronica Mars movie, which garnered $5.7 million in 2013. The beloved MST3K featuring stranded space travelers forced to watch bad movies — adding their own wisecracks to the movie soundtracks — debuted way back in 1988 on a Minneapolis station before moving on to Comedy Central forerunner the Comedy Channel. Later it did a stretch on Sci-Fi (now known as Syfy).
New cast members planned for the revival include Patton Oswalt, Jonah Ray, Felicia Day, Baron Vaughn, and Hampton Yount, with possible cameos by the likes of Jerry Seinfeld and Jack Black, according to Hodgson. How soon or where the new episodes might appear isn’t known but a holiday special was promised.
The Shout! Factory last month acquired rights to MST3K and has partnered with Hodgson and his company Alternaversal for future endeavors.
