Last night’s “The Great British Bake Off” 2015 finale was a tense one, with an estimated 14 million people tuning in to see who took home the coveted engraved cake stand prize – and simultaneously craving a sugary mix of ice buns and cake.

And, as we all know, mum-of-three Nadiya Hussain was named as the winner. The 30-year-old beat Tamal Ray, 29, and Ian Cumming, 41, to the top spot after whipping up a spectacular “Big Fat British Wedding Cake” – the sponge wedding cake that was missing when she married in Bangladesh.

“To the amazing people who gave me this opportunity. To my gorgeous baker friends. What a ride . Thank you #GBBO,” tweeted the winner last night.

The three-tiered lemon drizzle bake was a tribute to her husband Abdal, 34, who Hussain said gobbled up a slice after filming had ended.

“The Showstopper was a celebration cake, and as I never had my own wedding cake I wanted a proper iced wedding cake,” says Hussain, who’s kept us all entertained with her sassy comebacks and hilarious facial expressions over the past few months.

“I bought a sari that was red, white and blue, in the colours of the union jack and I decorated my stand with that. “At the very end of the filming I took the cake out to my family’s table and we all had a slice. So my husband and I did get our wedding cake after all.”

It all got a little emosh after that, as Hussain’s sheer shock and joy at winning had the whole of the UK reaching for the tissues. And if her reaction alone didn’t leave viewers in floods of tears, then her acceptance speech would most definitely have – especially as the great Mary Berry herself got all choked up, too.

“I’m never going to put boundaries on myself ever again,” said Hussain to the cameras, in her empowering victory speech. “I’m never going to say I can’t do it.”

Hussain appeared on Nick Grimshaw’s Radio 1 breakfast show this meaning, telling the X Factor judge that she’s watched the show for years and felt honoured to have taken part. “It’s such a sensational feeling to be just be in that tent, let alone win it,” the baking whizz said.

Here’s hoping Nadiya does something spectacular next.
