Nadler: Catholic Church ‘cannot impose their religious views’ on employees [VIDEO]

New York Democratic Rep. Jerrold Nadler, the ranking member of the House Judiciary subcommittee on the Constitution told The Daily Caller that the Catholic Church “cannot impose their religious views” on employees by refusing to offer health plans that cover contraception, as required by the health care law.

TheDC asked a group of House Democrats supporting the mandate why they think the federal government has the power to tell Catholic institutions what to provide in employee health insurance plans.

“They [Catholic Church] cannot impose their religious views on thousands or millions of employees,” Nadler told TheDC on Capitol Hill.

“They have an exemption from these requirements for the church itself, for people who are working under the doctrine of the church “ for priests, for nuns, for school teachers in catholic parochial schools.”

New York Rep. Nita Lowey responded, “Are we going to have every person delete from their insurance plan, provisions that they don’t use? No one is forcing anybody to use contraception.”

She continued, “We’re talking about requirements for the insurer.”

Master Blaster if the Church doesn't have to pay for those services and the insurance companies do - do you think that is a victory for you or the President??? That "pay for it" is just going to be passed onto the American people and WE will then have to provide the FREE Birth Control and Sterilization services women want - but is anything FREE in this world??? And just a side comment to Heckya - You must be a perfect human or an alien being Heckya, because where I come from ( i.e. earth), people and groups and businesses, and governments whose ENTIRE organization or body is corrupt, die. Yup they cease to exist and 2000 years of killing, rapping and taking anything they want and crushing anything and everything in their way would never have lasted - how long did Hitler last? And to you Melindaflaw - unmitigated gaul??? LOL

you CERTAINLY DON'T want the church being given ANY rights other than those of being a church. it's trying to get a foot in the Goverment door NOW!!

Joyce - BRILLIANT SHERLOCK! WHAT WAS YOUR FIRST CLUE - I CERTAINLY DON'T want the church being given ANY rights other than those of being a church - thats why I think its nuts that the Government is trying to get its foot in the door of the church and legislate what people believe!

Pregnancy is not a disease. So why would it be covered by healthcare?
      • oops 3 mths ago
Not being able to have an erection isn't a disease but insurance plans pay for those little blue pills.
    • suzyq  •  3 mths ago
So from Nadler- my rights are more important then your rights, because they are better. And if I can't have things my way then you are being prejudiced, rigid, or intolerant. I pay for a lot of things I don't agree with from the Mountain Dew the overweight lady on SNAP bought herself in front of me at Walmart, to the HOA fees that cover an amenity center I cant use,and a neighbors who smokes like a chimney & is on medicare. I totally understand where Catholics are coming from here. If you don't like the Catholic Church, then don't join, use their food pantrys, pregnancy services, watch their TV shows, don't stick your parents in their nursing homes, AND don't work at their hospitals or be a patient there. Simple as that.

Why is Jerry sticking his big nose into something that will get it chopped off? Is he that worried that his reelection efforts are falling short and he wants to make sure New Yorkers know who he is? The Catholic contingent will surely know who he is!

So Nadler calls religious freedom and beliefs "imposing their views" but conversely he has no problem imposing his agenda on America and "forcing" religious institutions to violate their conscience. This is typical left mentality when they want something it is "so called rights" but when a religious institution has a RIGHT supported by the CONSTITUTION OF THE UNITED STATES -(that's the document that Nadler, Obama and Supreme court justice Ruth Ginsberg want to change) it is called imposing. Sorry Jerrold but America is starting to awaken from a long nap and soon folks like you will not be an issue in our Government.

Stay Awake: you are right on the head in the way you have described freedom, and when someone calls you an Idiot because they don't have anything better to say, maybe they should look in the mirror to see who is the idiot.

New York Rep. Nita Lowey ... continued, “We’re talking about requirements for the insurer.”
Hey, Nita. This is subterfuge, plain and simple. How are you going to ensure that the religious
groups are not going to have to pay the insurer? Nadler says that the Catholic Church ‘cannot
impose their religious views’ on employees. How come it is okay for the Federal Government
to impose their anti-religious views on employees and employers? Religious institutions have
their rules based upon their religious beliefs which are supposed to be protected by the First
Amendment. The anti-religious Federal Government has seen to it that religious institutions
must hire people who do not necessarily believe in the "rules" and beliefs of those institutions.
Now, the next step in the war against religion, is to force those religious institutions to provide
services (directly or indirectly) that are against the teachings of those institutions. The Feds
should have never been allowed to tell them that they had to hire non-believers. And now you
and others want to force believers to pay for non-believers?!? Why? How is that different from
the tactics of Hitler and other dictators? The non-believers shouldn't work for religious
institutions unless they are willing to forgo some of the freebies handed out by others. The
First Amendment was intended to prevent this kind of government intrusion upon religion.

      Religious Freedom is at stake.
It is ironic that the Government want to tell religious hospital what to do, when government hospital aka the VA are the worst in the country.
Many of the best hospitals are run by the Religious Hospitals, because these hospitals are run on Prinicples, not political mandates, that change like the wind.
      Repeal Obamacare.

The Church has every right to speak out in the public square in order to form public opinion and influence legislation. Furthermore, the government is prohibited from interfering in internal church affairs by the constitution. If The Church decides to offer Her employees insurance that is an internal church affair.
      • Yehudie 3 mths ago
Mick - You obviously love your church and I respect and defend your right to do so. At the same time I wonder if love of your church has overtaken and pushed aside love of your country. America - despite all its many faults - is absolutely precious - Liberty and Freedom make it especially so. I hope that you will come to realize that in the public domain we may express our particular religious views but that it is unconstitutional to enforce those views on others - in this case by withholding insurance coverage that is standard in the industry. Conscience or belief do not confer exemption from the employment and labor laws of out land.
      • Big Leo 3 mths ago
It is the government that is trying to remove liberty and freedom, not the church. Religious freedom is far more important than the whims of the bureaucrats who rule our lives.
      • Illiteracy_ iz_ kewl 3 mths ago
The church doesn't like it, it can stop accepting gov't. money. Too easy.

How mentally inhibited must a person be to go to work for a Catholic organization and then find they do not support birth control and morning after abortions. So the argument is that a person can join a religious organizational company and then force it to violate its basic foundations......

The person can work in many places....
    • Nicholas  •  3 mths ago
I'm a religous person, but I believe that if religous institutions are receiving public funding of any kind, no matter how minute, they should lose their protected status.
    • Brian  •  Livonia, Michigan  •  3 mths ago
No one is forced to work for the Catholic Church. It is a free country. Everyone knows the Church is opposed to contraception and abortion. People who need these things for "free" can and should choose to work soemwhere else.
    • SusanZ  •  Chaska, Minnesota  •  3 mths ago
Have you people not heard of the First Amendment which guarantees freedom of religion for ALL AMERICANS?? There is NO CONSTITUTIONAL GUARANTEE for health care, contraception, abortion, sexual promiscuity, etc. Sorry, folks! But, all religious believers win this fight! If you want to use birth control, then YOU pay for it. It is NOT preventative medicine as the only thing it occasionally prevents is the conception of a living human being just like you! People are blessings & assets to our nation, not a disease to be eradicated!
    • Big Leo  •  Gila Bend, Arizona  •  3 mths ago
The RC hasn't interfered with anyone's liberty and freedom of choice. The government has interfered with the RC. If you think that paying for something you consider to be anathema to your ideals and beliefs isn't religious persecution, you haven't thought this through.

the catholic church needs to take this all the way to the supreme court and then we will see obama fail and then try and lie his way out of it like always.

The Catholic Church has been the most corrupt organization ever. 2000 years of crushing anything and everything that gets in its way, 2000 years of killing, rapping and taking anything they want. I big middle finger to all of you who believe in all the lies they have spread around the world.
    • MasterBlaster  •  3 mths ago
Even the POPE agrees with President Obama and yet all these non-Catholics defending the molesting Catholic Church are just going along because of the Anti-Obama ring to it. People listen. The Catholic Church does not have to pay for it, but the insurance compnaies will. There is no religion in that. All of you are clueless if you think the Catholics will win this. President Obama is setting another trap for Republicans to walk in and they are so mad and angry and racist that they are doing just that. Entrapping themselves. Women require more Preventive Health Measures than men. And all of you think this is new. He said this two years ago, pitching the Healthcare Law. That right there shows how dumb some of you are.

Each employee could have a health savings account set up from which they could spend money as they see fit. Easy solution. Now, talking about imposing religion, infant male circumcision....
