NASA Shuts Doors, Pulls Plug on Shuttle Discovery

NASA powered down the space shuttle Discovery for a final time Friday (Dec. 16), more than 28 years after the agency's retired fleet leader first came alive. The vehicle was "unplugged" inside Orbiter Processing Facility-1 (OPF-1) at the Kennedy Space Center in Florida.

The electrical shutdown, which came soon after technicians closed the shuttle's twin 60-foot (18.3-meter) long payload bay doors, was a milestone in Discovery's transition from a space-worthy orbiter to a museum exhibit. The shuttle, the oldest of NASA's remaining orbiters, is destined for display next spring at the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum's Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center in Virginia.

Discovery's cargo hold — which carried to orbit the Hubble Space Telescope and Ulysses solar probe along with modules for the International Space Station and more than a dozen satellites — was closed for what may be its last time. The Smithsonian plans to display the shuttle with its bay doors shut, at least initially.

The power down was much more permanent. Though Discovery's three electricity-generating fuel cells were reinstalled last week, they were first drained of all their reactants, and their feed lines were purged. Other than serving as an engineering example for researchers, they will never work again.

As a result, the shuttle's glass cockpit with its multiple computer screens and its backlit switches will from now on be dark. [Photos: See Inside Space Shuttle Discovery]

Since landing back on Earth after its 39th and final mission in March, Discovery has been carefully taken apart to preserve some of its components for future use while making the vehicle safe for public display. Its engines have been removed and replaced with replicas and its thrusters cleaned of their hazardous materials.

Inside its crew cabin, Discovery's waste collection system — otherwise known as its toilet — was removed, cleaned, and replaced, and its flight deck configured to appear ready for another mission, one that will never come. As with the fuel cells, the Smithsonian requested NASA keep Discovery as complete as possible so as to serve as a resource for future study.

Discovery is targeted to make one last flight in April 2012, though not under its own power and well within the atmosphere. Ferried atop NASA's modified Boeing 747 carrier aircraft, the shuttle will be flown to Dulles Airport in Virginia. There it will be unloaded by cranes and rolled into the Udvar-Hazy's James S. McDonnell Space Hangar as its centerpiece attraction.

Discovery will replace the prototype shuttle Enterprise, which the Udvar-Hazy has displayed since 2003. Enterprise in turn will be flown to New York City, where it is to go on exhibit at the Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum.

I still think it is a mistake in ending the program without a viable replacement for it in use
      • gregc 5 mths ago
Despite the fact I love the shuttle it's outdated, high maintainence technology.
In a country where so much of our security is based on space it seems off the wall irresponsible to strip search a grandmother at an airport but neglect to maintian space superiority, and leave the borders open at the same time.

It made me proud to be an American back in the 80 and 90. What ambition. So, so… very cool. Some day it will seem insanely low tech but right now I can’t see the next generation.

If you can't see it, then you must be blind. It's right in front of your nose.

Horatio, since you comment on all these, I'm sure that you check back to see if anyone has replied....so, why are you so arrogant? Are you some kinda' guru on space and technology? You're probably just an expert on everything, Huh?

We are giving up the high ground and becoming followers, and no longer leaders...
      • David 5 mths ago
The Space Shuttle never went more than 350 miles from Earth. Three weeks ago NASA launched a mission which is on its way to Mars. Meanwhile the Russian Mars mission failed to get out of Earth orbit. Is that giving up the high ground? I don’t think so.

We need to keep a positive public interest in space exploration otherwise we will be pathetically left behind. Space is the future of humanity, I think we just don't know it yet.

We'd say in the Army, "Lead, follow, or get out of the way". Now the Army will say, "Lead, Obama or Obama." LMFAO. He will ruin us yet.

they should have kept one plugged in. we never know what fate may throw our way in the course of time.
      • Jim 5 mths ago
Fate will throw all of us into the crapper when the national debt gets completely out of control which it is very close to doing right now. The US has no business having a space program with the debt as huge as it is now.

The next thing we would like to unplug is space between your ears!

jim, typically the NASA budget is drop in the bucket compared to other programs. not a factor. learn to vote.

In review of the postings of others regarding the age of the Shuttle Fleet, I agree. However, I don't agree with the idea that while the clock was winding down on the Shuttles, that NASA should have been developing a new space veichle to replace it instead of waiting until the clock reached 0:00 and then say...Times up, and we have to rely on others to get the job done. Do we really want to trust the Russians?
    • Bassthumb  •  5 mths ago
Space is the most exciting frontier that humanity can explore. There are so many possibilities hidden within the cosmos, everything from new technology, energy sources, quantum physics, planetary studies, life, resources, beauty, and maybe even intelligence…!

If you go back about 5 years, They,NASA, said they had a new fleet/ new design of shuttles ready to take over for the old ones. What happened to them ??
    • Kevin  •  5 mths ago
Why would they have a concrete date to retire the shuttles and rely on the Russians for transportation to the ISS BEFORE having a new vehicle ready to replace them?

I was too young to recall how my parents felt when the Apollo Program ended... For the first time since May 5th,1961.. More then 50 years.. The United States of America does not have a way to put our Astronauts in to space.. Today is a sad day for the people of America... We have gone from The Worlds ONLY SUPER POWER to nothing more then a market for the rest of the world to sell their CRAP too...

NASA should keep one shuttle ready in case it is needed...like an emergency rescue vehicle...or in case Bruce Willis needs to save us from a comet or something. [JK] ..seriously, we need to have some kind of backup plan in case of some unforeseen contingency. a vehicle such as a shuttle is too valuable to simply be moth-balled, and other rocket-launched vehicles are not versatile enough.
    • John M  •  5 mths ago
The Shuttle program was planned to end under Bush.
    • Bogger  •  5 mths ago
To quote Captain Kirk "Space, the final frontier". Humans NEED a challenge and things to shoot for of we as a people become dead. As much as I love the shuttles I am thrilled at their retirement and cannot wait for the next step that comes from their passing. The challenges of future space travel will bring out the excellence in the future scientist and engineers that a 30 year old spaceship cannot.
A return trip to the moon and a trip to Mars should be top priority for our nation.
    • Meab  •  5 mths ago
Read the open letter to Obama written by Neil Armstrong (1st man on the moon), Eugene Cernan (last man on the moon), and Jim Lovell (commander of Apollo 13). In that letter, you will find the facts of what Obama did to gut the manned space program. Just do a search on "letter by Neil Armstrong to Obama".

Stay one of the most advance space vehicle in the world, name one other thing in the world that can do what the space shuttle can do? We stop the program without a in place replacement. And we are paying the Russian $50 millions per seat. Really smart move...stupid government.

The airframes are at their operational limit of hours of use. Theres a expodential factor of catastrophic failure when you start pushing that limit. Aside from b-52's nothing areonautical should be pushed passed that point for very long.
    • PeterAmthor  •  Wentzville, United States  •  5 mths ago
NASA isn't cutting space exploration, they are just closing the space shuttle program. They are focusing now on going further out than just Earth orbit. The SpaceX company will be handling all the orbital work from now on. We've done about all we can in orbit the only way to go is further out so they will be using the freed up budget for that.
    • MrChevys3  •  San Jose, United States  •  5 mths ago
No longer a leader in the space frontier. Whether that is a good or bad thing, with privatized space exploration around the corner, is still unknown.
    • Slim  •  Raleigh, United States  •  5 mths ago
honestly they should have retired that piece of junk years ago. its time to develop new technology that will allow us to travel safer and further in space.
