NASA Space Shuttle-Carrying Jumbo Jet Retires After One Last Flight

One of only two planes ever to carry NASA's space shuttles on piggy-back rides across the country has taken its last flight after more than 20 years of service.

NASA 911, one of the two Boeing 747 jetliners that were modified for use as a Shuttle Carrier Aircraft (SCA) made its last flight Wednesday(Feb. 8). The four-engine jumbo jet, which was used to ferry shuttles between their West Coast landing site and East Coast launch site, flew its final mission making the short hop from NASA's Dryden Flight Research Center at Edwards Air Force Base to Dryden's Aircraft Operations Facility located adjacent to Air Force Plant 42 in Palmdale, California. The flight lasted about 20 minutes.

With the end of the shuttle program last summer, only one of the carrier aircraft — the original, NASA 905 — is still needed to fly the orbiters to their respective museums for public display.

In its retirement, NASA 911 will be used as a source of spare parts to keep NASA's Stratospheric Observatory for Infrared Astronomy (SOFIA) flying. Also based around a Boeing 747, SOFIA uses the jetliner as a platform for a 100-inch (2.5-meter) reflecting telescope. [NASA's Space Shuttle Program in Photos]

    Second in, first out

NASA 911, a Boeing 747-100SR short range version, was the second of NASA's two shuttle carrier aircraft. Built in November 1973, it originally flew as a commercial airliner operated by Japan Air Lines for about 15 years.

Acquired by NASA in 1989, NASA 911 — or as registered with the Federal Aviation Administration, N911NA — was then modified for shuttle service by the Boeing Company.

Among the changes made to it were the addition of three struts protruding from the top of its fuselage on which the orbiters were mounted and the installation of two vertical stabilizers to steady it in flight.

All of the jet's interior furnishings and equipment that was located to the rear of its forward doors were removed and additional instrumentation was added to allow the flight crew to monitor the electrical loads while the aircraft was ferrying a shuttle.

NASA 911 was delivered to the space agency on Nov. 20, 1990. Over the course of two decades, it carried shuttles between California and Florida, either returning them to their launch site after landing on the west coast or ferrying them to Palmdale for modifications and upgrades.

As just one example, NASA 911 returned space shuttle Atlantis from Edwards Air Force Base to Kennedy Space Center in Florida after the orbiter flew the final mission to service the Hubble Space Telescope.

Including its 20-minute final flight, NASA 911 amassed a total of 33,004.1 hours in flight over its more than 38-year flying career.

    Museum-bound

As NASA 911 begins its new role as a parts provider for SOFIA, its predecessor still has a few shuttle ferry flights to complete.

NASA 905, or N905NA, will take to the air on April 17 to deliver shuttle Discoveryto the Smithsonian's Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center near Washington, DC. The jet will then be reunited with the very first orbiter it flew, the prototype Enterprise, for a ferry flight to New York City.

Enterprise, which has been on display at the Udvar-Hazy Center since 2003, will go on exhibit at the Intrepid Sea, Air and Space Museumin Manhattan later this summer.

Finally in October, shuttle Endeavour will ride piggy-back atop NASA 905 to Los Angeles, where the orbiter will go on display at the California Science Center.

To prepare for those final ferries, Dryden Flight Research Center has been shipping out ground and airborne support equipment that supported shuttle landing and servicing operations over the past 35 years — including parts from NASA 911.

The overland strongback transporter that carried shuttles Enterprise, Columbia, Challenger, Discovery and Atlantis from their final assembly location in Palmdale to Dryden in the late 1970s through early 1980s was disassembled and shipped to Los Angeles late last month.

It will be used to transport Endeavour from Los Angeles International Airport to the California Science Centerand then will be part of the orbiter's temporary display until its permanent exhibit is completed.

NASA technicians also removed the pedestals from the aft shuttle mounting struts atop NASA 911. The pedestals will be used to secure Enterprise to a barge that will float the orbiter from JFK International Airport to the Intrepid by way of New York's Hudson River.

I saw that (747 carrying the SS) back in the 80s. They were flying low and slow. It was one of those profound "Proud to be an American) moments.I pulled off the road to watch as did several others. Gorgeous, absolutely GORGEOUS!

Living in Palmdale during the 80's, the sound of the 747 coming in was distinctive and one that would send me running outside to see her. And yes, I was proud of what our country created. Now we pay the Russians for a second hand seat on outdated hardware just to make it to space.Goodbye, old friend. We all were great once...

Months ago, I heard on the radio that it was possible to see both the Atlantis and the ISS with the naked eye travel across the sky. I checked the website and it showed an exact time and where to look in the sky. Luckily, it was a clear night and just at the moment I said to myself "no way" here comes two stars streaking about 25 degrees on the horizon, through the trees in the back and over the neighborhood. They were side by side, two bright stars. I ran out of my house and followed them up my alley, scaring an old neighbor who was checking his oil. I told him about the dots and his face changed into wonderment.

Only time I got to see the shuttle.

I laid back on top of a sand dune one crystal clear night in the Sahara Desert (Algeria) and watched the ISS travel by in the stars..Quite the sight for sure..

When I was stationed at Eglin AFB in Florida, circa 1991, the 747 (with shuttle atop) had to land at our field because of bad weather at the Cape. What a truly awesome sight to watch those two land. I'd have to look it up, but for the life of me I can't remember which Shuttle it was.

As a resident of the Antelope Valley,I've taken my son's to watch the shuttle leave AF plant 42 carrying a shuttle.A truly awesome sight.I've also seen the shuttle come in for a landing at Edwards AFB.I feel very lucky.

Amazingly enough, I hear nothing but everyone talking about how it is a sad day that our shuttle program has ended. Did you ever think there is a reason as to why the program was ended, it sure wasn't to save money. We have ended the country of eight tracks and old tube t.v.'s. There comes a time when staying still starts to stink, just like water. These are great mouments as I have no doubt we are bound for great and wonderful things, such as space travel. These are only the begining steps into a fantastic future. Be proud to be Americans and always hold your head up high for we have plenty to be proud of........

I'd feel better about the Shuttle program cancellation if Bush had actually managed to arrange for a real replacement, and if NASA weren't facing more and more cutbacks. Orion, which was woefully underfunded, could not achieve what Shuttle could.
      • Dimitz 3 mths ago
As much as I dislike Bush, I mush disagree with you Kirstin. Bush did not fund program, he just gave them an idea where to go - to moon, mars, and beyond, if you remember. Initially NASA gave the vice-president (Cheney) an estimate of how much money it needed to develop Constellation program. That estimate is AWAYS wrong, it was always the case with previous projects, including Apollo, STS, ISS, so there's nothing new here. Plus, you can't sell anything to congress unless you put some make-up on the price and make it pretty cheap. What I don't understand is that why on Earth after having spent over 8 B, we get no goal as to where exactly the space agency is going to?!
      • JerryM 3 mths ago
An asteroid. That was the target that space scientists consulted by the White House identified as the most interesting scientific target for a manned space mission. Already been to the moon, remember?

I worked at the Kennedy Space Center for 19 years..1988-2007 and was saddened to see the end of an era. Hopefully a new program will start soon to maintain our space exploration efforts. I was VERY proud to have been allowed to work there and see the Space Shuttle launches and landings. I saw the 747 and Shuttle in the middle 80's when I was in the Navy at Norfolk, Va. It was a beautiful sight. I didn't know I would be working there in a few years lifting the shuttle program by crane !! God Speed !!
      • Kirstin 3 mths ago
You're a crane operator? AWESOME! You folks are incredible, with your precision. Thank you for your service to our space program. And thank you for your service to our nation!

lived in San Antonio for a while. used to go out Kelly AFB to watch it land and take of. amazing how big it was!!

funny how none of them ended up in the heart of their home (Alabama, Georgia,Texas). All played starring roles in the shuttle program and all were SNUBBED by NASA
      • mfrmorrobay 3 mths ago
Maybe those areas did not have the draw - for the most amount of visitors - as the other locations? I would sure hate to feel what you feel if you are right Harley.

It's not a snub. Read about the selection process and you'll see. Houston especially -- they qualified for it in every factor but one: a city government that gives enough of a #$%$ about the Shuttle to actually attempt to meet the selection criteria.
      • JerryM 3 mths ago
Did you contribute to the fund raising effort in your area in order to secure one? No? Then shut the hell up!

I was lucky enough to see the Enterprise on the back of NASA 905 at Ellington AFB on it's return trip from that historic test flight. It was truly magnificent.

I got to see it carrying one of the shuttles when it made a landing in Houston. That thing is really big!

Farewell. Strange how this plane did not suffer from cracks in the wings after 20 years. Take a lesson Airbus.
    • mfrmorrobay  •  3 mths ago
Saw the shuttle a number of times out in Florida. But back at home in Santa Barbara in the early-mid '80's I looked up randomly and saw the 747/Shuttle lash-up on a long straight-in for the 15,000 ft runway at Vandenburg Air Force Base. This was before the Challenger disaster; at that time NASA was almost prepared for launching shuttle missions into polar orbits from Vandenburg - I believe it was for the downrange safety. I found later this was to test-fit the shuttle to the gantry at the space launch complex.

They used to be kept at the MAC (Marana center) in Arizona. They were cordoned off and had guards, but were still awesome to be able to walk up to as I worked my shift. Sad to think that they were kept immaculate, and guarded 24/7 and now will be used for spare parts.
