    "A Nation Mourns" Online Exhibit Documents the Corporate Web's Response to the September 11th Attacks

    New online exhibit by Jeff Greenhouse captures emotional public responses to September 11th showing the very beginnings of corporate social media, along with a fascinating retrospective of 2001-era website design.

    As the world prepares to mark the ten-year anniversary of September 11th, a new online exhibition offers a look back at the response of the corporate world in the week following the shocking terrorist attacks of 2001, through the lens of their corporate and brand homepages. Created by Jeff Greenhouse, “A Nation Mourns” (http://www.aNationMourns.org) documents the public messages and sentiments of over 100 major corporations and brands, as delivered through their corporate homepages. This exhibit offers a fascinating look at the beginnings of branded social communication.

    "The world changed on September 11, 2001. So did the corporate world's desire to communicate directly to the public, " said Greenhouse. "This gallery documents the groundbreaking use of corporate homepages as a direct outlet for the people and emotion behind the brands. "

    Although direct, open dialogue is commonplace today, in 2001 corporations and brands primarily communicated to the public through press releases and advertising campaigns. The public sentiments and messages on display at “A Nation Mourns” predate virtually all corporate social media, coming before the launch of Friendster (2002), MySpace (2003), Facebook (2004) and Twitter (2006). They convey sentiments of shock, condemnation, support, hope, solidarity and sympathy.

    The exhibit also serves as a retrospective of 2001-era website design. With the recent celebration of the 20th anniversary of the very first website, the designs on display in the gallery represent the exact midpoint of World Wide Web history. Companies included in the gallery come from diverse industries including fashion, finance, technology, retail, entertainment and food.
