Native Americans May Have Trekked From Siberia

FRIDAY, Jan. 27 (HealthDay News) -- The earliest Native Americans may have originated in a tiny mountainous region in southern Siberia called the Altai, according to anthropologists.

The Altai is at the intersection of Russia, Mongolia, China and Kazakhstan and "is a key area because it's a place that people have been coming and going for thousands and thousands of years," Theodore Schurr, an associate professor in the anthropology department at the University of Pennsylvania, said in a university news release.

He and his colleagues conducted genetic analyses of people living in the Altai and compared them to Native Americans. They found unique mutations shared by both groups.

The researchers calculated how long these mutations took to arise and estimated that the Altai people diverged genetically from Native Americans 13,000 to 14,000 years ago. That fits with the idea of people moving from Siberia into the Americas between 15,000 and 20,000 years ago, they said in the news release.

It's possible and even likely that more than one wave of people crossed the ancient land bridge that linked Siberia with North America. However, the Altai is the only geographic focal point from which Native Americans can trace their heritage, according to Schurr.

"It may change with more data from other groups, but, so far, even with intensive work in Mongolia, they're not seeing the same things that we are," he said.

This type of investigation could prove useful in terms of biomedical research. For example, both Siberian and Native Americans "seem susceptible to Westernization of diet and moving away from traditional diets, but their responses in terms of blood pressure and fat metabolism actually differ," Schurr said.

A combination of genetics research and traditional physical anthropology may help researchers learn more about the factors behind these differences.

The study was published Jan. 26 in the American Journal of Human Genetics.

I am in my 60's. We learned this in early elementary school more that 50 years ago. Can anyone spell Land Bridge when the ice age lowered the sea levels as it captured the seawater in ice? A result of all this locking up of seawater lowered the level of ocean so much the land bridge was exposed between Russia and Alaska. The great migration occurred as these were hardy and resourceful people. This is not news. It is filler and more make-work for the grant seekers.

Wow, I am so glad that the smart ones in PA have finally caught up with the rest of us. They had me worried for awhile. I wish they would please explain the Kennewick Man to me . Until he was discovered I believed that the Native Americans were the first ones to inhabit North America. Does anyone have any info on this ?

"Native Americans May Have Trekked From Siberia"
This is something I learned in 1966. 6th grade, Mrs Puritz. Same time that I learned that the Vikings "discovered" America, 500 years before old Chris.

      Slow day for science news????????

I still wouldnt doubt people sailed to America. The Mayans and Incas sailed all over the place up and down the coast. Who knows what technology people had back then.

I think this article is just adding new details to what we already know, not saying that the basics have changed or were previously unknown. Science does this a lot.

Native Americans have been coming in waves. Fact is 12 thousand years ago is not the oldest human vestige of habitation in the Americas, there are sites that pre-date this period. There are to date sites in Brazil such as the Pedra Furada with paintings that date aprox 30,000 years ago. as well as Topper, in South Carolina, and the oldest so far found is the Monte Verde, located in Chile with with 33,000BC. There is always the possibility there were more than one source of migrations to America.

Many Native Americans reject these studies because they just know that they were created by a White Buffalo God, or something along that genre, and reject the concept that maybe their ancestors were actually Siberian Asians. But any thinking Native American can look in the mirror and see "Siberian Mongols" looking back at him. No surprises here. Even some Lakota words are lifted straight from the Mongol language. Ha (yes), eeyah (no), doshta (why), all these Lakota words, and many others, are also Mongol words. The differences in digestion are from thousands of years of diet, and their bodies adapting to these diets. Asians are made to digest rice, and don't do well on wheat, just as Caucasians do well on wheat and don't do as well on rice. For other genetic reasons, most Asians do not manufacture the correct enzymes to process alcohol from their systems, and become toxic if they drink alcohol. In Caucasians, the enzymes are reversed, and they process alcohol efficiently. All these things are of academic interest, and do not imply that one race is superior or inferior to another in any way, shape or form. It just explains our origins, our genetic differences, and our dietary preferences and tolerances. It's a fascinating field of study, provided you're open-minded enough to delve into it.

I guess the additional evidence reinforces the crossing theory. The headline just got people to open the story. Worked on me, at first thought.

There seem to be two distinct strains of Native Americans: Athabascan and Puebloan. Their origins are different. If you really want to know, ask a Native American where they come from. If you're lucky they'll tell you.
