NATO leader: No intention to intervene in Iran

BRUSSELS (AP) — NATO has "no intention whatsoever" of intervening in Iran, the alliance's top official said in response to reports that some governments may be planning a military strike against Tehran's nuclear program.

The U.S. and other leading Western governments believe that Iran is intending to develop a nuclear arsenal, and Tehran's failure to suspend its nuclear activities has already led to several sets of U.N. sanctions. But Iran maintains its nuclear program is exclusively civilian, aimed only at producing electricity.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is reportedly trying to persuade his Cabinet to authorize a strike. Israel, which considers Tehran its biggest threat, has successfully tested a missile believed capable of carrying a nuclear warhead to Iran.

Secretary-General Anders Fogh Rasmussen said NATO supports political and diplomatic efforts to resolve the nuclear issue and urged Iran to comply with U.N. resolutions and stop its uranium enrichment programs.

"Let me stress that NATO has no intention whatsoever to intervene in Iran, and NATO is not engaged as an alliance in the Iran question," he said.

However, Fogh Rasmussen declined to comment on reports that Israeli air force jets conducted drills last week at a NATO air base in Italy. They were said to be practicing long-range sorties from the Decimomannu base on the Sardinia island and included combat aircraft, aerial refueling tankers and electronic warfare and control planes.

Later Thursday, Italian Defense Ministry spokesman Capt. Emiliano Biasco confirmed that an exercise involving Israel and other countries was held at Decimomannu in late October. He declined to give more details.

NATO cooperates closely with Israel as part of a group of friendly nations in the region, known as the Mediterranean Dialogue. Israeli warships have participated in exercises with NATO ships in the eastern Mediterranean.

Fogh Rasmussen visited the Jewish state earlier this year.

Tensions in the Middle East have peaked just after Turkey — a NATO member and Iran's neighbor — agreed in September to host an early warning radar as part of a planned NATO missile defense system aimed at countering a possible threat from Iranian missiles.

Iran has blamed Israel and the United States for disruptions in its nuclear program, including the mysterious assassinations of a string of Iranian nuclear scientists and a computer virus that wiped out some of Iran's nuclear centrifuges.

Tehran has also insisted that the international community deal with the issue of Israel's own nuclear weapons. The Jewish state is widely believed to have accumulated a sizable arsenal, although it has never officially acknowledged possession of such weapons.

Whether or not NATO says it is involved in any idea of intervention in Iran, the situation is grave. Ahmadinejad and the Mullahs are not tracking straight and they are brutal in the oppression of their own people. The problems of Israel are bad also, but one does not excuse the other. If Israel is committing crimes and stupid acts of oppression against the Palestinians, such as refusing to halt the building of settlements, that does not justify the threats to annihilate Israel. About half of the citizens of Israel are opposed to the government policies, and there is hope there for democratic peaceful progress.

let's try to do a logical analysis: If Iran's nuclear program is for civilian use, they should be proud to open it up to inspectors, right? I mean why not? Everybody could be assured that there is no problem. Of course, since the enriched nuclear fuel is for reactors, they must be building several reactors to use it, so where are these? I haven't heard of such construction, has anyone? I seem to have heard of one that has been under construction for years.

On the other hand, constant refusal to allow inspections doesn't look so good, and if here aren't at least a few reactors with connections to the grid being built, we just might think Iran is lying, hm?

If you were running Iran, and you knew that your actions were leading to the very real possibility of being seriously bombed, and all you had to do is allow inspections of your peaceful facilities, what would you do? But if your facilities were really intended to produce bombs, you would act more or less the way Iran is acting, wouldn't you? But if you were trying to make a bomb in secret, and the secret was wide open, and your security was pretty well blown, and you kept on trying to make the bomb anyway, you would be nuts, right? Because you would be reasonably sure that someone would bomb you before you actually got your bomb built, wouldn't you? Or would you think that maybe you could get a bomb or two built first, and then what? Hm. Not too likely that the rest of the world will allow that to happen, so maybe you need to rethink? But you have invested so much of your political and economic capital in the project, and you aren't really very sane to start with, so now what?

Meanwhile, the floods in El Salvador are showing further development of the Global Warming crisis, and that problem will cause chaos for the whole planet. Perhaps squabbling between nations should not continue? Is anybody in Iran thinking past the next few weeks or months? Is Iran actually being run by a combination of religious nuts and fanatics who are incapable of rational thought? Has Iran smashed the will of the people to resist and protest, totally wrecked the idea of democracy, and created a government of fear and an army of crazy thugs, who simply can not think beyond the ends of their noses, or guns, whichever is shorter? No wonder they worry about Assad being overthrown. Reality is creeping toward them, and they don't like that at all.

Both countries can blow each other up for all I care. As long as the United States stays out of it. However, the United States can never stay out of other countries affairs and must get involved in everything.

Isreal may be engaging in Saber-rattling, but something tells me they're standing on the battlefield as they bang their shields. If the world fails to act, Isreal will. They have a previous history of bombing sites for less reasons than what Iran is doing.
Hopefully Iran's stubbornish attitude doesn't carry them down a road of no return.

Sounds to me like Israel is the stubborn one. We have no evidence that Iran is developing nuclear weapons, but there are plenty of other nations that secretly already do.

We've had troops in Iraq and Afghanistan on both side of Iran for a decade preparing for this. We are pulling out of those 2 countries, so rather than head for home it looks like war will break out. We're just waiting for Israel to make the first move and we will be involved if Iran retaliates. It's almost like it was planned all along.

Israel has been suspected of having WMD for year's and refuses to allow UN inspection, so who do they think they are policing that area of the world for such weapons?
    • Dicky  •  6 mths ago
NATO is supposed to be a defensive organization of European nation members. Libya did not attack any nations, or any NATO member nations. F NATO especially after they bombed Christian stores, homes, schools, and churches in the Balkans to assist muslim jihad narco-terrorists that have murdered US troops in Germany, and planned to murder US service personnel inside the US.

      Ask this question:
If you are living near some city in Europe, USA, Canada, India, China and so on why should that city with nice people, playing kids, all the advantages of modern civilization – be leveled by nukes in 3rd world war?

All because Iran thinks world is revolving round about, God is Iranian, even Angels speak Iranian only and Israel which does not care about you or your cultural well being.
In fact they have you for as same as would have SS NAZI in 1944.
I think they are so called silent crazy culture theirs hatred or mental problem as soon or later will surface in BC 4000 mentality expressional judgment seeking world’s attention form feeling inadequate. Sorry I am way to smart for someone to sweet talk me with good night storiesp for kids.
I think world should wait till they mutually annihilate one another – in fact I alvays wanted some real estate investment near Jerusalem or to have some cottage in Iran. Why not if land be vacant free of all people - let us then speculate!
