Navy: 8 Calif.-based sailors discharged for hazing

SAN DIEGO (AP) — Eight sailors have been discharged from the Navy after a hazing incident aboard a San Diego-based amphibious assault ship that was captured on video and included the choking of a fellow sailor, a Navy spokesman said Saturday.

The eight received general discharges following allegations they assaulted and choked the sailor aboard the ship, the Bonhomme Richard, as part of a rite to initiate the sailor into a new department, said Lt. Commander David McKinney.

McKinney said the assault, which took place Jan. 17 in the ship's berthing area, was videotaped, and the victim treated for injuries.

"He was choked out, evidently blacked out and had bruising," said McKinney.

The injuries were not serious, but the sailor sought treatment and reported the incident to his superiors, leading to the discharges, McKinney said.

The sailors, all from the junior ranks, made statements to investigators that amounted to confessions, McKinney said. They called the incident just roughhousing but the Navy considered it hazing, he said.

"When an incident like this happens, it's got to be taken care of," McKinney said. "It goes contrary to our core values."

One of the sailors seen in the video, Charlie Davis, 20, of Dallas, told ABC10 News that the attack was just "play wrestling" and "boys being boys," and he and others had been through the same thing earlier in the day.

"A couple of the guys wrestled me down and had fun with me and then shook my hand and welcomed me aboard," he said.

Davis, who had in the Navy for just five months, told the TV station he's disappointed in himself, but believes the Navy's zero-tolerance hazing policy is too harsh.

"I buy into it for drugs and alcohol: that's zero-tolerance," said Davis. "But play wrestling with no malicious intent and for eight people's lives to be destroyed? You've got to be kidding me."

The sailors could have appealed their captain's discharge decision, but none have done so, McKinney said.

The Navy did not release the names of the discharged sailors or the victim.

The action follows recent congressional hearings on hazing in the military, including the case of Lance Cpl. Harry Lew, who shot himself in a foxhole in Afghanistan last year after he was beaten, forced to do repeated pushups and fed mouthfuls of sand.

I am a decorated Navy Veteran. I have witnessed hazing , both to me and to others. I have never seen any benefit to the Navy, or any lesson of value, other than humiliation. It is childish, and has no place in a Navy of professionals. I think zero tolerance may seem harsh, but it is needed to end a foolish "Tradition" that serves no purpose.

I served 23 years in the Navy and saw several occasions of excessive physical "initiation". I knew it wasn't right from the beginning of my career and still don't believe it's right but feel the eight sailors didn't deserve to be kicked out over it. There are ways to do traditional initiations without choking someone out or bruising them...that's flat out excessive and they deserved to be reprimanded but not kicked out.

If it's determined that an assault took place then the sailors involved should be prosecuted & punished. A general discharge was pretty leniant; dishonorable discharge plus time served once found guilty. My point is that if they can't do the time, then don't do the crime.

maybe some wall to wall counseling...let the NCO's police them up. that's what they're there for...

Punching someone in the arm can be play wresting. Wrestling with someone is play wrestling. But choking them til they passed out is assault. If someone has to go to sickbay, then you know you've stepped over the line. These sailors are lucky that they only got kicked out of the Navy. In the civilian world, they would go to jail. They should've gone to the brig, fined, then kicked out.

Attempted murder. The Navy was correct to get rid of them. Now these morons can take their talents to the private sector and maybe try murdering their fellow co-workers if they can get a job after this.

As a veteran of 10 years, also one of 7 brothers, four uncles, several cousins, and grandchildren who also served; I don't believe hazing or code reds or fighting among the ranks is anything but bad for the service and its' members. There are rumors of ethnic "Gangs," in the military, drug use and distribution and yet, prejudice. It has no place in the military. I and all my family for three generations, served with integrity, fairness and Honor.

Initiation is Old School idiocy. I make my new guys read the Constitution, amazing how few of them ever had before. That is where I want their loyalties directed.

Absolutely, Joseph! Let education and ethos be right of passage, not the frat games. I have an unbreakable bond with hundreds of shipmates around the world as a result of my 22 year career, several of them in combat. Never hazed or was hazed... amazing! And I even drink beer with them after hours.. how could it be?

Good! Choking someone until they pass out is not playing and very serious. Doing anything to another that causes them to have to seek medical treatment is not playing. If both parties are not enjoying the encounter, it is not playing but bulling.

Time to reprimand the others who witnessed the behavior and did not stop it or report it timely.

Look, I'll even do the 8 discharged sailors a favor and grant them EVERYTHING they said. Everything about it just be roughhousing, and having a little fun...whatever, find, i'll buy it. But when the evidence showed that you had choked him out, meaning he thought he WAS going to die, you crossed the line that you knew had to be there. And you videotaped it, which was even dumber. If it was all just roughhousing, you wouldn't have had to choke him out. I'll put up with a bruised arm, like one poster talked about, but if your actions cause me to think I'm going to die, maybe you're really thinking about that too, and that's not the fun loving hazing these sailors are talking about.
      • KondoMonster 3 mths ago
Not only was he choked but he passed out because of it. He was sent to sickbay because of it. And these discharged sailors behaved like it was no big deal. But to me, they got off scott free. They only got discharged. No brig time. No pay reduction. Nothing.

Boys will be boys. Too bad they didn't make the transition to being men. There is nothing funny, or rewarding, or useful in brutalizing another person. A man would know that.

i remember that the snipes (the guys that worked in the engine room) used to have this tradition that whenever a new snipe came aboard the ship they would all hold him down and pull his pants down and grease his buttocks with some type of machine lubricant goo. i steered waay clear of those guys.
my only initiation was that they had me running around all over the ship looking for a part that didnt exist, but i figured out very early that it didnt exist and just used it as an excuse to goof off for a couple of hours.

When I was in the Navy, some guys were "Wrestling" in our shop EVERYDAY, knocking equipment and people over, we got fed up with them and one day we DUCKTAPED them together with ALOT of ducktape. that way they could wrestle all day. it was HILARIOUS! they were SO MAD... but, they were more careful when the wrestled. they made sure there was no ducktape in reach! Remember, these "men" are usually just 18-22 (ish) they are still kids, just because they can defend their country, doesn't make them mature!

Choking a man until he nears pass out or does pass out is not hazing. You men are supposed to be adults and represent your service, you failed to do so to be cool, now get a life and go to work. What would you say if the other man died, I' sorry, we were just goofing off, I think NOT!
    • Dibeetus  •  3 mths ago
We sent guys to get flightline, rotor wash, board stretchers. We never did anything physical.

That said, I saw a guy get hazed really badly once. Way over the line. So right before the next rotation, I packed a pair of panties in the ringleaders duffle bag. His wife found them.

SO tell us Todd, how was that 2 year long divorce complete with loss of visitation, restraining orders, domestic violence charges. Be careful who you mess with. They might just be a downright goddamn mean son of a bytch

The regulations are strict for a reason. If you cannot maintain discipline on your own, then you have learned nothing important during your basic training. Self discipline, honor and courage are the core ideals recruits must learn as well as rely on throughout their service contract. We have enough screwups running this country, we don't need them getting others killed because they can't control their juvenile urges.

One says the penalty is too harsh, wonder what he would think if the young man who was choked till he blacked out dis not wake up? Better be glad they are just discharging him and not putting them in the brig for 30 days or more!
