    Navy SEALs cringe over media spotlight, acting, but hope film "Act of Valor" draws recruits

    WASHINGTON - Navy SEALs never expected the film "Act of Valor," starring active-duty SEALs, to be this big.

    SEAL commanders allowed independent filmmakers, the Bandito Brothers, into their elite ranks to turn real-life training exercises into a feature-length movie to attract recruits.

    They thought the film might open in a couple of theatres in military towns, then quietly move to cable. Then came last year's SEAL raid that killed Osama bin Laden. Now the film is opening Feb. 24 in 2,500 theatres nationwide.

    SEALs who have seen the movie say its action scenes are mostly accurate and don't reveal too much about SEAL operations.

      I don't think it is prudent to divulge much more than the very surface of training or mission goals. Americans (and others) don't need to know the specifics, simply be confident they are effective.

      I really think that what th enavy seals do or any special ops in particular should remain rather unknown without broadcasting them or thier capabilities

      For those of you who think the United States of America is so bad, just remember you can always LEAVE. No one is forcing you to stay. The reason you can sit here and say what you want is because of these brave men. Love it or leave it. Navy SEALs are the BEST.

      do SEALS need to be recruited or convinced become SEALS? I thought those guys were pretty much born that way.

        No they are trained that way. After two tours at Ft Bragg I got to see the Special Forces and how they are washedout from being on the wrong side of the road. These men all go through intense training to become the best. I also got to see the Delta Team in action. Am retired US Army and proud of it.

        This Country was born by men of Seal caliper, men who did the undoable. I think of men like Iacco who refused to let Chrysler die as a Seal, Men like Truman who said, against much opposition, I'm going to end this war with the least cost of American lives, he was a Seal in every sense of the word. Every Military Cemetary in America has Seals buried there who wore an army uniform or a navy uniform or an airforce uniform. A Seal exemplifies a man who will get the job done despite the cost to him, even his life. You may not know much about them and you will probably never read about them but there is a group in the United States Army know as Pathfinders, They've preceded every operation where America has put troops on the ground in any operation.       Weird. Too much attention. When I was in (81-88), we stayed as far away from media attention as possible. No pictures, no comments, nothing.. Whatever happened to PerSec?

        Good question and its sad that its come to this. The countless movies about them have been embarassing/hard to watch (especially Charlie Sheen) but at least you know they are actors playing a part. The intention was not recruiting now am not so sure. The thought of being satisfied with knowing a job well done perhaps is no longer enough.

      Now these guys, like many others in the military, are true PROFESSIONAL ATHLETES! Unlike those over pampered babies on T.V. whose greatest worry is a lost season and not getting all the money they think they deserve for "entertaining" us; as opposed to those who make squat to protect us. Go SEALS!

      I think at the end of the day those that want to be apart of that group for the spotlight and fame will find no place in the Special Operations community. Those that have the passion and desire to serve their country and understand that most if not all of their activities will go untold will be just nicely. You’re a silent professional and unsung hero, not an egotistical rock star. Most of the public don’t seem to understand that.

      During the Height of the Vietnam War the Movie the Green Beret was made using real Green Berets along with John Wayne, David jensen so whats the problem. And it was filmed at Bragg nearly every scene

      Lame. Yet another example how SEALs bask in the PR spotlight, and to suggest that they didn't know it would be such a big hit?! PLEASE! After every successful SEAL op, Navy commanders are jumping up and down and saying LOOK AT ME! LOOK AT ME!! O O RIGHT HERE! WE DID THIS! Whatever happened to being a quiet professional? You wont see Active Duty Green Berets or CAG operators begging for any media spotlight, nor will they be making any movies anytime soon... If you think that all of this is "real training exercises" and none of it is exaggerated, perhaps you need to join the "elite ranks" and see for yourself. Sounds to me its a move to secure funding and a continued role in a non-maritime conflict...

        It's not entirely their fault, ever since Red Team killed OBL all the media and anyone can talk about is "SEAL Team Six" and "Navy SEALs". Before that, I guarantee you very few if any would have heard of DEVGRU. And come on, you can't tell me that if any other group like the CAGs or SADs had taken down Bin Laden they wouldn't have gotten any media time. Besides to make the erroneous statement that all SEALs enjoy the public eye is quite a fallacy. Some of my closest friends are at the NAB assigned to Team 1 and I can promise you they loathe being praised or mentioned. They are just as humble and modest as anyone else in the busniess.

      I won't be watching it, for the same reasons as the Military Bigwigs have. It gives too much information to our enemies about our methods of intraction and extraction and operations.I hope that some small tidbit of information is not gleaned by a potential enemy and cost the life or lives of the men on some future operation. I sincerely believe that the hyped up operation which got Bin Laden by the media resulted in the loss of thirty one Seals in that failed operation some months later in Pakistan. No one will ever be able to convince me that these men were not sent on a wild goose chase and brought down by information gleaned from media publication of how we got Bin Laden. Some things of a military nature do not belong in the public domain. The only thing I need to know about the Seals is that they are there when we need them.
