"Jersey Shore" has returned to the airwaves thanks to MTV. After a stint in Miami and a little time off the guys and gals return to the same home in Seaside Heights, NJ that made them famous. Snooki, Mike "The Situation," Pauly D, J-Woww, Vinny, Ronni and Sammi are all back in the house once again. Not returning is was everybody's favorite verbal punching bag Angelina. She's been the show villain more consistently than any other cast member, frequently fighting with the other roommates and never trying to make peace. Angelina left the show originally after only a few days. The producers saw fit to give her a second chance and to the surprise of the rest of the cast she turned up in Miami to join them. The second time Angelina stuck it out for longer than before, but ultimately left the house early with the entire rest of the cast happy to see her leave. So now with Season 3 airing it seemed like the cast would be out one roommate in general and the show villain in particular. It turns out that the show was able to find new blood to fill out the house and quickly painted a returning cast member as the new villain.
Deena is the first new member of the cast since the show started in a year ago. She's a friend of the pint sized Snooki and was invited by her to come to the Jersey Shore. Deena made a fairly good impression on nearly everybody. She was welcomed with open arms, and made her presence as a party girl known right off the bat. The very first night in the house Deena got extremely drunk and inadvertently exposed her private region to Mike (or at least it's claimed to be inadvertent.) So the new roomie is in the house and seems to be getting along just fine with everybody. So what's the show going to do for a villain to help keep the drama and the conflict bubbling away?
For the source of resentment and drama the producers of "Jersey Shore" didn't need a new cast member, they already had what they needed in returning housemate Sammi. Near the conclusion of the groups excursion to Miami, Sammi came to blows with J-Woww over a letter that she and Snooki wrote to Sammi trying to alert her of Ronnie's wandering hands (and lips, and tongue, and possibly other body parts as well.) The two never made up following that incident and apparently haven't spoken since then either. That brings an immediate tension in the house, though not enough to cement Sammi as the villain. That was done when in one selfish move she claimed the upstairs bedroom and its three beds for herself and Ronnie. By not taking a room with two beds (which would have been far more logical) Sammi made it clear that she really didn't care about any of the other people, and Ronnie of course nodded his head and went along with it.
This one move, coupled with giving an instant cold shoulder to Deena who was trying to be friendly (at least at first,) makes Sammi the new trouble maker of the house. Taking that room forced some awkward rooming situations, specifically when Mike (the last to arrive) realized he had to share the room with Sammi and Ronnie. Then when everybody else seemed prepared to welcome Deena (including Ronnie who joined in on a toast to her that Sammi refused to raise her glass for) that isolated Sammi even further. But like any proper villain Sammi thinks she's the hero, and rather than patch things up she's taking a "me against them" approach. This should easily lead to loads of delicious drama. In fact she and J-Woww started exchanging blows just as the episode concluded (do these guys know how to do a cliff hanger or what?)
Welcome back to the shore where the guys are big, the girls are hot and the fists fly freely. There seems little doubt that Sammi will function as a reality show villain for the remainder of the season. Not only has she isolated everybody in the house except her boyfriend Ronnie but the cracks in that relationship are already showing. As fans already know Sammi and Ronnie have been off again, on again for pretty much their entire relationship. Ronnie says they've been good for a while and are coming up on their one year anniversary. However two things happened that will likely lead to fights that will split them up later. First when Sammi rejected everybody else after dinner and retreated to her room Ronnie had little choice but to follow. That meant all the fun was being had without him as he and Sammi sat alone in their room and did... nothing. Ronnie is a guy who likes to party and being cooped up is not going to bring out the best in him. In addition to that Sammi clearly expects him to back her in any fight, she was yelling at him to agree with her about J-Woww just before those two came to blows again. Since Ronnie is trying to keep things smooth between himself and everybody else this means that he's going to start resenting her for driving off people he thinks of as friends.
The cast is back, the villain is in place: let the drama commence. Sammi will undoubtedly be at the center of nearly every major conflict in the season. This leaves the question will everybody become as sick of her as they were of Angelina? Only time will tell, however if Sammi and Ronnie are still together at the end of this season then the producers might want to consider giving them their own spin off. If their relationship with each other doesn't implode completely then at least they're going to be so out of touch with the rest of the gang that it won't be in anybody's interest to put them all together again. Besides the biggest draws in the show remain the iconic Situation (and his abs) and Snooki (and her poof.) The drama should be sweet this season but after that Sammi should probably be cut loose if she doesn't make up with at least a few people. Nobody needs a negative nancy putting the damper on all the fun... not for two seasons in a row at least. However for this go around it should make for some great fireworks.
