Neil Young: Steve Jobs listened to vinyl

Neil Young: Steve Jobs listened to vinyl because of higher fidelity

DANA POINT, Calif. (AP) -- Legendary rocker Neil Young took his campaign for higher-fidelity digital sound to the stage of a technology conference Tuesday, saying a giant of the industry was on his side: the late Steve Jobs.

Young said the Apple co-founder was such a fan of music that he didn't use his iPod and its digitally compressed files at home. Instead, he used a physical format well-known to have better sound.

"Steve Jobs was a pioneer of digital music. His legacy is tremendous," Young said. "But when he went home, he listened to vinyl (albums)."

Young told the "D: Dive Into Media" conference Tuesday that he spoke with Jobs about creating a format that has 20 times the fidelity of files in the most current digital formats, including MP3.

Such a format, he said, would contain 100 percent of the data of music as it is created in a studio, as opposed to 5 percent in compressed formats including Apple's AAC. Each song would be huge, and a new storage and playback device might only hold 30 albums. Each song would take about 30 minutes to download, which is fine if you leave your device on overnight, he said.

"Sleep well. Wake up in the morning. Play some real music and listen to the joy of 100 percent of the sound of music," he said.

Although Young didn't have a practical plan for developing such a format — saying it's for "rich people" to decide — he said Jobs was on board with the idea before he died from cancer at age 56 in October.

"I talked to Steve about it. We were working on it," Young said. "You've got to believe if he lived long enough he would eventually try to do what I'm trying to do."

Young's opinion of Jobs was confirmed by interviewer Walt Mossberg, a journalist with News Corp.'s All Things D website, which hosted Jobs at its conferences.

Mossberg said Jobs expressed surprise that "people traded quality, to the extent they had, for convenience or price."

An Apple Inc. spokesman declined to comment.

Young, a 66-year-old singer and songwriter, was full of other surprising opinions, including his defense of recording labels such as his own Reprise Records, a unit of Warner Music Group Corp., as being a nurturer of artists, even as he said recording companies had botched the transition to digital music.

Young also said that "piracy is the new radio," suggesting that illegally copying low-quality songs was an acceptable way for fans to sample music before buying higher-quality versions.

The irony here is that I listened to so much Neil with the volume cranked to Bleeding Ear Drum level, that now I can't tell the difference. I do have "Down By the River" permanently scored into my brain, though.

Problem is that people don't listen to music as a single activity-it's just another piece of noise in their multi-tasking lives. MP3s are to fiidelty what fast food microwave nation is to a gourmet meal....

i tend to agree, except that i don't consider your description of music as background "noise" is totally accurate, it is more an addition to a generally full sensory experience. most people love music, even if it might not be a symphony or a jazz classic, because they experienced it in the context of living their lives....just like a good meal is better in the company of others, so is experiencing music.

Well, a lot of people listen to music in their homes, so why can't they just turn up the volume to hear it anywhere in the house or outside?

Smarterthan, I feel the exact same. I now am an old fleemarket shopper in the records section, am online in Ebay looking for my favorite old albums (including Neil Young albums.) So if you see a little old lady looking through the records, that's probably me.

I remember the first time I heard a CD, there was obviously something wrong with the sound. I feel sorry for all the people who have grown up and always had to listen to them or MP3's, when they are missing so much.

where i think this is off base is the idea that "High Fidelity" is going to make the music actually "better". where most people get to listen to music is usually in connection to other activities. it usually doesn't matter if the sound is being projected from a pair of tinny speakers or a full orchestra...but take the music away, and it can diminish the whole occasion...and think of when and where most people hear their favorite songs...it is usually NOT in a setting that is studio perfect.

I once hung out with an audiophile whose only furniture was a beanbag and about 50 grand worth of stereo equipment. I think he went through a few girlfriends and a wife trying to reach his goal of true fidelity...

Yeah, the die-hards go to extremes. Honestly, you don't need to spend that much to get great sound... there's a lot of used equipment out there. And you can build certain components (particularly cables) with only a little training and a lot of care. The other portion is maintaining the equipment and the music collection.

Good Lord! Jobs and I agreed on something? Who knew?

MP3 is a very convenient format with really sucky fidelity. You are only getting the essence of the music, not the real thing.

Properly produced CDs are still probably the best compromise between hifi and convenience.

I have lots of vinyl, and still play it. the problem with CDs is the sample rate and bit depth is too low to capture all the harmonics, but it is 40 year old technology. Storage was more expensive then, and high speed analog to digital and back was not easily done. I run 2x the CD data rates on my LP conversions, and they sound very good, the problem is that does not work with the car radio!

Vinyl never died.... 8 tracks and cassettes have come and gone but NOTHING compares to true analog sound!

It's so true that "piracy is the new radio," I don't buy vinyl till I've heard the music. F#*% paying twice. Never trade quality for convenience or price!

Do as I sell, not as I listen. Does Chinese Democracy sound better as a download?

They tried DVD Audio (kind of kaput) and SACD (barely alive) already. These are "super fidelity" CD (actually DVD) formats. Problem is there are not too many players, a limited number of new albums come out on SACD, they cost more, and you need to be a dog to hear much of the high-end benefit. I have a few of these. Many have true surround-sound (NOT DOLBY)---discrete channels. Many come with a nice booklet. Sony makes some players (they and Phillips developed this format---just like the same pair that developed the CD). I'll take SACD over vinyl any day. Whatever "warmth" that is lost is made up for in the lack of static, rumble, wear, inconvenience, tremendous expense (audiophile analog equipment), etc.. Plus, nearly all SACD's are "hybrid"---have a CD Audio layer that plays in any standard CD player. I have advocated the recording industry move to SACD and offer the public a reason to buy a disc again, rather than pirating a good quality mp3 (or whatever) format file.
