Netflix lowers subscriber forecast on plan split

NEW YORK (AP) — Netflix is lowering its U.S. subscriber expectations for the third quarter because of customer losses relating to a split of its DVD and streaming options.

The company, which separated its streaming and DVD-by-mail services two months ago, said Thursday it now expects 21.8 million subscribers for its streaming-only service and 14.2 million subscribers to get DVD plans. That's down from a late July estimate of 22 million streaming customers and 15 million DVD subscribers. It sees the most subscriber decline in DVD-only plans. That forecast went to 2.2 million from 3 million.

It backed its forecast for international subscribers and overall third-quarter earnings.

The Los Gatos, Calif., company said that despite the revision, it thinks the split was the right move.

Shares of Netflix slipped 16 percent in premarket trading.

The CEO took a gamble and lost. He should resign, trying to throw a "curve ball" at the loaylists INSTEAD of just being straight: "loyal customers, we are raising prices because we don't have any competition and there's NOTHING you all can do about it". Instead, his "slick moves" have brought NEGATIVE reactions. His own attempt to advance market share is the cause for this redux with the loyalists. He has only himself to blame and as such, the Board should force him to step down! Nothing was broken so why attempt to "fix" the price? As the CEO, he got greedy and really proved his "bottom line" is his OWN financials, at the expense of the loyalists for whom he clearly cares NOTHING about. Just like our politicians, both democrats and republicans, it's the AMERICAN way: lie to the people, then shake them down "legally", always putting self -interests FIRST.

They shouldn't be greedy with their loyal Customers. They should have grandfathered the loyal customers plan and move on. It's that simple, everyone is happy and the shareholders.

Netflix Shares actually went UP after the announcement. Do some research will ya?

Well, I for one am a BIG fan of Netflix, especially since they beefed up their cult movie / B-movie / Independent horror movie selections for streaming (though there are much more of them available in their DVD catalog). Hopefully Netflix will continue to recognize the value of picking up retro cult movies (which cost a mere fraction of what the greedy studios charge for license fees) and that many of us middle-aged & older fans don't care about the expensive overrated modern TV shows.

Even if Netflix saw the light and modifed and reduced their current offers, I would still be left with a bad taste in my mouth. I was a proud and happy Netflix subscriber since 1998, but now they burned me. So, goodbye Netflix. I hope you enjoy your new corporate profile and your so clever business plan to dump all of your loyal customers. Enjoy handing out pink slips in this economy. You will be a memory in five years.

So $7.99 for unlimited streaming is too much for you?!?

I dropped NETFLIX 3 months ago and dropped some weight as well. I now use REDBOX exclusively and walk the 5 blocks to pick-up and drop-off movies. Thanks NETFLIX for being so greedy!

The selection of Redbox SUCKS! Netflix blows them away with so many more rare DVDs and even their streaming service has added a stunning amount of rare and obscure cult movies which is exactly what I'm looking for. Sure if you just watch mainstream stuff you can get by with Redbox but many movie connoisseurs look beyond the borders of Hollywood for their entertainment and Netflix delivers the goods! When you can find the Giallo classic "Black Belly of the Tarantula" on streaming (among many other obscure classics known only to avid collectors) then somebody at Netflix has done their homework.

I will be dumping Netflix when my current subscription expires.

Netflix sucks for people located overseas, such as service members and DoD employees. I was paying membership for streaming and DVD's, and Netflix streaming is not possible in Germany. On top of that, it takes 7 to 10 day for DVD's to arrive here, and then another 7 to 10 day for them to get back to Netflix. In one month a subscriber in the U.S. can rent four times as many DVD's in one month as I can. Maybe even more. However, both of us pays the same costs for membership. Now Netflix goes and raises the #$%$ prices, making it more expensive for people overseas that already get maybe 6 movies in one month. If Netflix was smart, they would reduce the costs for people with military addresses located overseas, and I bet this would increase their customer base. I'll be canceling my membership too. I don't pay 16 dollars a month just to rent out 4 to 6 DVD's. If I can't stream, then what I need it for.

Glad I sold right after their announcement. Grabbed the extra 7% and bailed.

It's a good company and after the dust settles it would definitely be worth reinvesting.

If you support corporate greed and putting more Americans out of work, by all means continue to be a Netflix customer. Netflix is pushing customers to "streaming only" plans in order to increase profits and phase out DVD's completely. Once they phase out DVD's what do you think happens to the warehouse and shipping employees? Not to mention the businesses of DVD manufacturers, Movie studios, and US Post Office. So you see this affects a far larger picture than just your "$16 per month" budget. The greed of one company will be felt by several others...but what do you care...you get to watch "Friends" on your laptop. Enjoy!!!

You can't stop the march of technology. Physical media is on it's way out. Five years from now computers will no longer have DVD players either. Everything will be cloud based.

It's nothing to do with "greed".
      • Bass Man 8 mths ago
Car Guy, I agree to a point. If Netflix simply allowed physical media (DVD's) to die it's slow untimely death that I agree is coming, then you would be right. But Netflix is forcing this on it's customers by disguising it as a "service" and overcharging for it, then you bring the Greed factor into that equation. The faster Netflix can do away with the overhead of buying DVD's, Storing DVD's, and Shipping DVD's, and the subsequent jobs that go along with all of those, the better for profits and shareholders. I dumped Netflix as soon as I heard of the price hike...and don't miss it one bit.

I cancelled Netflix services when they announced the 60% increase 2 months ago. My entertainment options will not be held hostage or extorted, for an exorbitant & greedy price increase, in a failing economic climate. There are other options & I don't miss Netflix.

The pirates ship is sinking . . . To Davy Jones Locker with Netflix! ~~V~~

I'm haning in there for a while with the streaming. I dropped the DVD's since that was Netflix's purpose with this pricing anyway (for them to get out of the DVD business). But, I am starting to scrape the bottom on the streaming ... if they don't use the increased profits to improve the streaming choices, I'll look for other alternatives. (Yes, believe it or not, even with the numbers cancelling Netflix, this move is still more profitable for Netflix in the short run.) The biggest challenges for streaming are the Networks and Studios. They will do whatever they have to do to not lose any profit, so the licenses on streaming their products are going to be expensive. We'll see how this comes out in the long run.

All Netflix subscribers should boycott the service, subscribers own Netflix. Put them out of business and send a message to corporations that greed is NOT good.
    • David  •  8 mths ago
Losing subscribers is only part of the story. They did not "lose" me, but I cut my plan to the $5/month option. They will lose revenue even if they didn't lose the customer.
    • Outsane  •  8 mths ago
My business is going, going.......gone! Homerun for Netflix.
    • Norig  •  8 mths ago
well they lost me is all I can say.... I enjoyed the streaming but never really LOVED it as there wasn't much except old movies and so I stuck to the dvd only option but it seems Blockbuster has better selections and a better price on their dvd plan.
    • Daniel  •  8 mths ago
Netflix's arrogance is showing. It's a good thing though, as it will boost competition from Blockbuster (alive and well after being bought by DISH network) and Redbox, which is good for the consumer. Case in point. Several of the studios are wise to not letting Netflix get a monopoly and restricted their new release dates on dvds. STARZ is also wise to their game, as they recently cut off Netflix and now will not provide movies for them to stream. Case in point: try getting the new release X MEN 1st Class today from Netflix (or Redbox)...not. Blockbuster has it, and a better dvd in the mail plan with unlimited free exchanges in their stores and no extra charge for bluray.

      GREED is a terrible thing.
    • ColleenC  •  8 mths ago
No kidding. Any idiot could have seen this coming. "Hey, customers! We're going to charge you more for what you're already getting by dividing it into TWO plans! Isn't this an awesome idea?!" And now they see what their customers thought of their awesome plan.

I cut my Netflix bill in half. Their streaming selection wasn't all that good, so I just get the DVDs now. But wait, I was the outdated, DVD watching customer they were trying to get rid of with this plan. Sorry guys, you killed Blockbuster and Hollywood video, now you're stuck with me.
