    Netflix raises rates, irks subscribers

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Netflix has provoked the ire of some of its 23 million subscribers by raising its prices by as much as 60 percent for those who want to rent DVDs by mail and watch video on the Internet. The company is separating the two options so that subscribers who want both will have to buy separate plans totaling at least $16 per month. Netflix Inc. had been bundling both options in a single package, available for as low as $10 per month. New subscribers will have to pay the new prices immediately. The changes take effect Sept. 1 for Netflix's current customers. Netflix isn't changing the $8 monthly price for an Internet streaming-only option, which the company began offering late last year. But instead of charging $2 more for a plan that also offers one DVD at a time by mail, the company will charge $8 for a comparable DVD-only plan. That brings the total to $16. Those who want to rent up to two DVDs at a time with streaming will pay $20 per month, or 33 percent more. Those wanting three DVDs at a time with streaming will pay $24 per month, or 20 percent more. When Netflix unveiled the streaming-only option, it also raised the rates for its most popular DVD rental plans by $1 to $3 per month. Those plans included unlimited online streaming too, as had been the case since Netflix began sending video over high-speed Internet connections in 2007. That means longtime subscribers who want both entertainment options will get their second price increase in eight months. The higher prices could slow Netflix's growth as some customers cancel their plans in protest and potential new subscribers balk at the rates. Subscribers rankled by the latest price increase vented their outrage in comments on Netflix's blog as well as its Facebook page, where there were nearly 17,000 comments, mostly negative, by late Tuesday. Many of the posters were vowing to leave Netflix to try out rivals such as Apple Inc., Amazon.com Inc. and Hulu.com, which is currently looking for a buyer. Some of the critical remarks likened Netflix to greedy oil and cable companies, while others blasted it for betraying loyal customers who had been recommending the service to their friends and neighbors long before it became a household staple. Investors, however, seemed to welcome the higher prices in stride. Netflix's stock rose 53 cents to close Tuesday at $291.27. Netflix's market value has increased by seven-fold and created about $13 billion in shareholder wealth during the past two years, largely because its total subscribers have more than doubled during the same stretch. As of March, Netflix had 22.8 million subscribers in the U.S. — about 34,000 more than the number of households subscribing to Comcast Corp.'s cable-TV service. The company's willingness to risk alienating subscribers signals that it needs to bring in more money to cover its rising costs. Netflix's earnings would likely be squeezed if it continued to cover the overhead for buying and shipping the discs while also spending heavily to license more video for its streaming library. In the first three months of this year, Netflix spent $192 million on streaming rights after pouring $406 million into the library last year. Jessie Becker, Netflix's vice president of marketing, wrote Tuesday on Netflix's blog that charging just $2 more for a bundled plan "neither makes great financial sense nor satisfies people who just want DVDs." On the flip side, Netflix customers who haven't embraced Internet streaming will be getting a price break. They can now subscribe to a DVD-only plan for just $8 per month for one DVD at a time, a 20 percent reduction from the current package that included streaming. Netflix, which is based in Los Gatos, has never said how many subscribers get the streaming-only options, but most households prefer getting both because each has its advantages. Internet streaming provides more immediate gratification and the convenience of getting video on mobile devices, but the selections typically don't include the latest theatrical releases. That's where DVD rentals come handy. Netflix cut deals with several movie studios last year to delay sending out some DVD releases for their first 28 days on sale in return for better deals on Internet streaming rights. Far more titles are available on DVD than through streaming though. Although it's preparing to deliver DVDs through the mail for many more years, Netflix sees Internet streaming as its main lure for new subscribers, as Internet connections become even faster and an array of mobile devices make it easier to watch video on the go. The company is only selling streaming packages in Canada, where it expanded last year, and in Latin America, where it will enter 43 countries by the end of this year.

Can't believe all the complaints. At $8/month, this is the best deal going; the cost of just two or three traditional rentals from your local video store. Even with the DVD option at $16/month, this is about the cost for Showtime or HBO with a vastly larger selection and new titles popping up all the time.

People...Netflix is phasing out DVDs and the ever-rising postal rates. It's the cost of doing business and - personally - I'm grateful to have it connected to my TV! :)

With these extra resources, you would think they'd be bragging about the ability to purchase rights of newer dvds and what not. But it's just gonna be the same crappy content for more money. Best canclec now rather then later.

I could understand another price hike, if they were getting a lot more streaming content but they haven't announced that have they. As it is I'm watching a movie on my ps3 and it stops every couple of minutes to reload. Not nearly worth the money they are asking, so I'll be cancelling at the end of august.

I agree with Reverend! If this meant we would have a better selection for streaming then I wouldn't mind. If you want to see anything good or that was a box office hit, it won't be in the streaming catalouge. Netflix you are going to lose every customer you have if you don't add better movies to your streaming section!! Me being one of them and as Sandra said. I've been with you from the start and now you are going to lose my buisness as well.
    • Juana Maria  •  10 mths ago
YES! This is #$%$! 60% raise?...what at this people thinking? Sorry Netflix...I'll be taking my business somewhere else.
    • sandra  •  10 mths ago
We are quietly going away. Netflix, we have been with you since you began. Your streaming selection sucks. Redbox here we come, too!!!!
    • Reverend  •  10 mths ago
This wouldn't bother me at all if the streaming catalogue were larger. As it stands, they are forever removing things and it takes an eternity to get new things added.

And on top of that, I'm sure I'm not the only one who sang the praises of netflix to friends and family. Now they're going to raise the price 60%? Well, I wish I hadn't told anyone now...

Hulu and it's 3 minutes of ads for every 1 minute of programming can go burn. With netflix hosing its customers I guess people will be back to piracy (you know, the other thing that the bandwidth that allows for streaming is good for).

I absolutely agree. I'm retired due to poor health, and can no longer drive. I have never asked for any financial aid of any kind. This greed and unreal profits stops when we the consumer decides that it does. Will cancel when rates are increased.

This is the downside of being a publicly traded company. Once you are publicly traded, your business model changes. You manage for shareholder value, and not for consumer value. You manage for the short term, and not for the long term.

Shareholder value and consumer value are quite frequently at odds with each other.

True, but it is possible to kill this service with greed. Neflix just isn't that strong of a product. It's not like people have no other options.
    • David  •  10 mths ago
This would be fine if they would make everything available for streaming, not just a selection of older movies.
      • LogicSuperior 10 mths ago
It's not their choice, that's up to who owns the rights for the movie.
      • bluemacaw 10 mths ago
It wasn't that long ago that we couldn't even stream Netflix through our PS3s, because of hackers. We had NO access, but yet they still charged us the same. This went of for weeks to a month.
      • Dulanic 10 mths ago
While I agree it would be, it isn't up to netflix.

      Dear Netflix,
We used to get along so well, you used to be there for me, but for some reason we've grown apart. I remember the times we had... 3 discs at a time, then streaming. Those were the days I never felt so alive! Then you said I couldn't get 3 discs anymore, that I wasn't good enough for you. So I sucked it up. After all, we still had those one disc nights and unlimited streaming. And that was still pretty decent. But now the relationship is all about you, all about what NetFlix wants. Well I'm sorry, but I have needs to, and I'm going to find someone new. I can't deal with your selfishness anymore. I hope you find someone who will love you, but this thing we had... It's over. I just wish I could have seen you for who you were 6 years ago, I could have saved myself from a huge mistake!

      • Ron 10 mths ago
What an idiot. I don't know where you live, but I can get 7 discs if I want to pay the price. My price for 3 discs will actually go DOWN after this split, so I'm glad. I've tried the streaming, and don't care for it as much as having the Disc in hand, and you will not find any better price ANYWHERE guaranteed.

If I recall correctly, Netflix was paying huge dollars to get access to certain television shows. We end up paying for these shows indirectly whether we watch them (streaming) or not.

For those that think streaming provides as good an image and sound as a quality DVD or a Blu Ray for that matter are sadly mistaken. The quality can be good but never great. To stream movies, the digital file has to be highly compressed. Any major compression means loss of quality. People can argue this all they want but it remains a fact and often it can be readily seen during streaming that the quality doesn't even match a standard DVD at times.

If you don't mind a lesser quality view of a movie (via streaming) then Netflix might be a very good option at the price it gives for just steaming. Do remember not nearly all the movies Netflix carries for rentals is in the category for streaming. It is far far less.

I'll have to think about this price hike carefully. and probably drop streaming entirely and stick with the rentals. Lets just say I am not happy rewarding Netflix with my dollars but there isn't really an alternative for rentals at this time.

If streaming actually had a large catalog and, you know, KEPT what they have on catalog there, I wouldn't mind. I would probably just switch to instant. But the fact remains that some shows/movies I like rewatching on Netflix instant periodically disappear and I can't watch them anymore. It's hard enough to find something good on there to begin with.

I am an economist and financial advisor advising clients during the worst recession in American History. So let me understand the economic formula for Netflix success. They are going to raise prices 60% during this period of time? This pricing formula will accomplish two things for them. First, subscribers will leave in droves and second, the competition will be licking their chops over their potential new business they will be getting. What a concept.

Looking at the numbers, I just realized that even if Netflix loses 50% of their customers they'll still be left with an additional 10% profit margin. Pretty slick.
