Netflix is reviving axed 'Arrested Development'

NEW YORK (AP) — "Arrested Development" is coming back to life on the Netflix video streaming service.

The quirky TV comedy series is resuming production and will be available for instant viewing by Netflix subscribers in 2013, the company announced late Friday. "Arrested Development" aired on Fox for three seasons from 2003 to 2006.

The Emmy-winning show focused on the formerly wealthy Bluth family and featured Jason Bateman, Will Arnett, Portia de Rossi, Michael Cera and Jeffrey Tambor in its cast. Netflix didn't specify which original cast members might be returning or say how many new episodes were planned.

Twentieth Century Fox Television and Imagine Television will produce these new episodes for the online subscription service, reviving the series five years after the Fox broadcast network pulled the plug.

Imagine Entertainment co-founders Ron Howard and Brian Grazer noted that bringing a series back from cancellation almost never happens.

"But then, 'Arrested' always was about as unconventional as they get, so it seems totally appropriate that this show that broke the mold is smashing it to pieces once again," they said.

Earlier this year, Netflix announced that "House of Cards," a new political drama starring Kevin Spacey, will be produced for viewing on the service in 2012.

I hope it has the original cast, that is what made it so good in the first place.
I like Jason Bateman as an actor, I have always been entertained by him.

Netflix is not going anywhere, people, regardless of the grumbling and dissatisfied customers. It's still the cheapest option next to cable and satellite. And the option to watch only what you want to watch for $8.00 a month ($16.00 for DVD's) is still far better than having to pay Brighthouse/Comcast/Time Warner, etc. 175.00 a month for 3000 channels. In the end, after hours of channel surfing, you'll still only watch what you want to watch anyway. And if there are programs that Netflix don't have yet, then there's always the network websites that show episodes you've missed only one day after airing. Get over yourselves, people, and look at the big picture. In today's economy, can we really afford NOT to continue with Netflix? So what if the big guys are making changes to the services? And what? Are they not allowed to be creative and innovative? So what if it didn't work? Are they not allowed to make mistakes in their decision-making? Geez!! I am not leaving Netflix, no matter what they do, for all the reasons I've stated above. It's still the best and the cheapest option out there.

That was a most unconvincing sales pitch from an obvious Netflix PR hack. Laying it on a bit too thick there.

I agree with you, Sandra. We've had Netflix for SEVERAL years now, almost from since it started up. We don't do the DVDs because it really isn't necessary and we kept forgetting to watch them anyway. But we stream all the time. And I find it worth every penny. I agree with you, people want everybody to be perfect and never stumble. Stupid people.

Did anyone beside me received an email from OnlineDVDClass today which talk about the Walmart and Netflix lawsuit? I wonder how they got my email. Off course I did not click any of the links provided in the email. But I wonder if anyone else receive this.

Why are there so many comments stating how Netflix sucks because you have to watch it on a little monitor? I think the majority of Netflix users actually watch the streaming shows on their TV. I stream to my 55 inch TV and the quality is pretty good. If you have little kids, Netflix is the best. Keep them quiet with hours and hours of cartoons!

I wish they'd bring back Firefly too. I'd watch that faithfully and buy every product they advertised during the commercials and tell all my freinds, relatives and coworkers to watch it. I'd buy, wear and use Firefly merchandise & products and even quote it in my daily life and learn Chinese and name my vehicle Serenity and ... and and and

They will be getting me as a customer in 2013.....That was won of the best TV shows....and it makes me mad that is was canceled. Then you see the crap that is still out there on the air!!!!

Okay, so I like AD...but Netflix is going to pass these charges along to the consumer again....personally, as Netflix customer, it's a rip off. But until something better comes along we're stuck with them, and they know it. Without some competition, Netflix will continue to raise prices, offer less movies immediately, and I have absolutely NO idea how anyone can use the streaming, the shows are old, no newer movies on there. So yeah, it might be cool to see more AD and hellz yeah to Firefly, but we are all going to pay for it in the end....so bend over you Netflix lovers, you're gonna pay more and still get crap service where you have the same DVD in your queue at the number one position and they're sending you number 34 in your queue.

      Dear Netflix,

After f___ing up pretty badly all year (price hikes, separated streaming and DVD delivery services), I'd just like to say that the decision to finance and release new episodes of Arrested Development is so brilliant that you don't have to sleep on the couch anymore. Come back to bed. All is forgiven.

Does anyone remember when you HAD to go rent a DVD or video for $5.00 per and run, RUN back in 2-3 days or 'BAM!'= late charge? I remember spending easliy $30.00 per weekend not to mention the gas money and time it took. Netflix is WAAAAAAY better. Not that they didn't make mistakes this year. But this may be the wake up call Hollywood needs to try to understand streaming is the future.

Best Show ever!!! Never should've been canceled in the first place!!
    • Dennis  •  Salina, United States  •  6 mths ago
Netflix is saving a show that had a three year run and is off the air for five years. Chuck had a five year run and its ending in 2012. Human Target was also canceled by Fox. I feel this was unjustly canceled because Fox did not stick to the show's premise of a bodyguard who is willing to do anything to protect his client. Even if needed, stand-in; body double for the client.
