    Late Nevada Caucus Draws Complaints

LAS VEGAS – Hours after Nevada presidential caucus locations had closed on Saturday, more than 300 voters wrapped around the Adelson Educational Campus here to participate in an unusual exception to the state's election laws: a chance for orthodox Jews and Seventh-day Adventists to cast their ballots after sundown.

But near the table where participants were to sign an affidavit stating under penalty of perjury that their religious beliefs precluded their ability to vote during regular caucus hours, a cluster of voters who did not meet that requirement slowed the line as they were turned away, one by one. Most had come at the urging of the Ron Paul campaign, which had placed calls to its supporters informing them of the "second chance" to vote Saturday night.

"I received probably 10 phone calls today saying if you didn't make it this morning to your caucus, you can come down here – 30 minutes away from my home – and they would let you vote, get a second chance at it," said 23-year-old Henderson resident Michael DiCicco, a Paul supporter who said he was not aware the late caucus was reserved solely for those who practice certain religions. "It's discrimination."

Stephen Melancon, another Ron Paul supporter who was a delegate in 2008, said he was aware that the exception was to accommodate based on religious beliefs, but, "I thought there's no way they're gonna be able to restrict registered Republicans who were not able to vote in the caucus." Melancon, a high school teacher, said he was working a second job in the morning during the regular caucuses.

Critics weren't limited to Paul backers. Newt Gingrich supporter James Grindstaff, a Seventh-day Adventist who made it inside and knew the conditions of the late caucus, called the exclusion of those who did not meet the religious requirement "ridiculous," and was asking around for someone with whom he could lodge a formal complaint.

Clark County GOP Chair David Gibbs said the exception was approved under caucus rules, and had been vetted by attorneys. Asked why the county chose to make an exception for religious purposes and not other circumstances that would potentially prevent attendance on a Saturday morning, Gibbs reasoned, "there's a difference."

"If somebody wanted to be there but they don't have the means, they have friends, you know, they have other opportunities," he said. "I know folks who took the day off at work today in order to participate in the caucuses this morning."

Gibbs added that the exception "had nothing whatsoever to do with anything other than the fact that these folks who could not participate because of religious observances. Nothing."

Prior to the event, skeptics questioned the coincidence that the late caucus would take place at a Jewish school named for casino mogul Sheldon Adelson, who has poured millions of dollars into a pro-Newt Gingrich Super PAC. Adelson, who attended the caucus, has denied any involvement in organizing it.

After a delayed start and more than an hour of hearing arguments from various candidate supporters, Paul was declared the winner of the special caucus with 183 votes over Mitt Romney, Gingrich, and Rick Santorum, who received 61, 57, and 16 votes, respectively.

They need to have a public recount right away.

OK. It shouldn't take too long to count all 1,000 Paul votes.

They should film ALL vote counting period.

So, gaming caucuses becomes a lot easier when they are spread out over a whole day instead of held close together. Why weren't all of the caucuses held in a short window closer to the late night time to reduce this risk, if NV felt it important to have a late night time available @ 1 place? Alternatively, y not do the caucuses on a day/time range of the week that more people could make it easily, like 6 -9 pm'ish any weekday instead of giving such special treatment? Also, while offering an option to handle a large population of people who could not make it until this time seems alright, making it exclusively for them does not. It is hard to imagine that affidavits signed and proven false would actually be grounds to charge someone with perjury, since the precept behind them sounds unconstitutional.

Also, what was cool at this place was the recording of the vote counts. That should have happened at each and every caucus location - great idea.

The people in Nevada seems to be receiving the same treatment at the poll/causus , as the Russians in Russia .

That is so very right John, thanks to ES&S and Diebold paperless voting machines. Everyone interested in voter fraud look up who owns these 2 companys and their connections and you will understand what John is talking about.

The turn out in Nevada seems so low over all.

Nevada will be losing their early vote 2013 due to the low turn out this year, now would be the time to make sure the next vote does not come on Saturday, respect everyones religion, let their vote count.

It's surprising the number of 7th Day Adventist and Orthodox Jewish supporters that Ron Paul has. Quite surprising.

WE are more concerned with who'd be the best President for -US- but, it's also worth considering who'd be best for Israel. Every candidate but one, claims they would be. But: in 1981 when Israel bombed Iraq's nuclear reactor (Iraq was then our 'ally') Paul was one of the very few congressmen to refuse to condemn Israel for doing so. Not because he supported it, but because he doesn't take sides on principle. Even when pushed to take sides, he won't. (Unless a war is declared by Congress, such as in World War II.)
Paul has said again and again that Israel herself should decide what she should do with her enemies, whom to negotiate with, whom to fight, and whom to sign a treaty with. America should be left OUT of it all in his opinion. Paul would also eliminate not only the billions we pay to Israel, but ALL foreign 'aid' to any country, Israel along with her enemies (to whom we pay, combined, even more.) For the price of a measly 1% of Israel’s GDP, Israel can be free to make her own decisions on foreign policy. This means when she is attacked, she would no longer have to call the White House to ask what she is allowed to do about it.
Does Israel need that $3 billion in annual aid? Some argue that she does, but then again, Israel spent $30 billion evacuating the Gaza Strip in 2005, ten times the value of American aid. Plus, Israel’s economy is still growing in the face of a global recession, even excluding the 1% of GDP that America gives Israel. As for weapons, Israel is the world's 4th largest arms exporter, and a major nuclear power.
More than money, Israel needs true sovereignty--which she will get under a Paul administration more than a Gingrich, Romney, Obama, or any other--because Paul won't take sides. America, unfortunately, has long exploited both sides, which exacerbates the whole conflict--not unlike an unwise, overbearing, and manipulative parent who spoils their children.
Ron Paul would truly be the best for Israel, even if the more rabid Likudniks don't realize it. But MOST importantly, he will be the best for US--and, I believe, for the entire world.

@Ray exactly - Even Netanyahu favors the US butting out. It is clear that we have overstayed our welcome, such as it was, and should do so... both for our own people and peoples in and around Israel.

ray iraq war never an ally. But we made millions in the sale of arms.
    • Free Fire Wire  •  3 mths ago
I guess they need to raise hell with the GOP and have the Caucus switched to a time that doesn't conflict with their religious views from now on.It's simple enough.
      • Houston 3 mths ago
Wrong, If Paul was such a great Constutitionalist he would be the first to tell you that there is a seperation of Church and State, and Religion and Politics should be kept seperate.
      • terrio 3 mths ago
I'm fairly sure Ron Paul and the other candidates had no say as to when the great state of Nevada set the date and times for their caucas.
      • Craig M 3 mths ago
This was all a plan to keep Ron Paul from winning all those that could not vote due to religion would have voted for Ron Paul ...Right?

It's not who votes but who counts the votes

It goes to show you how its crooked. and needs to STOP!.
    • Dar  •  3 mths ago
Unadjusted entrance polls and reports from caucus-goers show Paul second with a small lead over Gingrich.
    • ramon C  •  3 mths ago
Dont forget the military overseas. They didnt get to vote here and Im sure they would have wanted to as well. This special vote would have been a landslide victory for RON PAUL ....and no chance of fraud here...

Those who vote elect no one, those who count the votes elect their winner.. especially here in Clark County. The Red Pill is so corrupt it's not funny

Looks like Obama will be a two term president,no way Romney is going to beat him without the RP supporters voting for him and it isn't gonna happen.Romney=Obama=Bush.More war, more debt, more job loss, more inflation.I am not really surprised, voters fall for the same punch line year after year,Ron Paul is an honest man who tells it like it is,if congress listened to him the financial mess we are in could have been avoided but they chose to vote in a way that put money in lobbyist pockets instead of keeping it in ours.Everyone wants to lower the debt but does not want to make the necessary sacrifices to make it a reality. We are more in debt than any other country and politicians keep saying what a rich nation we are.We borrow money to give it away, anyone who took 1st grade math should see the stupidity in doing that. The debt grows out of control,we are on the verge of economic collapse and Romney states he would spend more to make our military the strongest in the world so no one would challenge us,well Romney you idiot we already have the strongest military and are being challenged by Ara#$%$ with no military training to speak of and we are in it for billions of dollars and 10+ years and more importantly good men and women lost their lives so your banker buddies can remove their central banks and put theirs in.And Gingrich was asked to resign from being speaker of the house for ethics violations, which means he is dishonest and yet people are dumb enough to vote for him,we are broke and he want's to spend millions to go to the moon.Im not a genius but i know enough about the moon to know we don't need to go back.So goodbye rights and liberties, goodbye US dollar and sovereignty,i will miss you.Hello draft,im glad i am too old to join in your #$%$ war on terror that we were supposed to fight over there instead of here, but now are told the entire world including our backyards is part of the battle field.Even if the terror acts they say they prevented had happened it would not equal the crimes that result in death that Americans do to other Americans on a daily basis.More people die each year from smoking cigarettes than died on 9/11.Freedom is not free,it comes with danger but is worth the risk. Many great men and women died for us to keep it and now we willingly are letting it be taken from us.Most say there is no way they will give up their right to bear arms-thats great but when they shut down the sell of ammo your guns will eventually be useless.I know writing this was a waste of time but it felt good to vent anyway.Give all the nasty replies you want to,it does not bother me,but just 2 years from now you will see Romney is the same Goldman Sachs puppet Obama is.They give tons of money to both, ask yourself why would someone support opposite sides of a race other than putting themselves in a win/win position.Oh well least Romney wont have to change his cabinet.

Ron Paul: "We need to focus on securing our OWN borders and coastlines instead of spending so much money overseas guarding other nations. Just a tiny fraction of our overseas military budget could provide tremendous help at our borders. Port security...must be a higher priority than 'nation building' abroad.” -- May 9, 2006

I'll vote Paul for just ONE thing he can & WILL do, w/ no ratification needed from Congress: get US OUT of our several immoral, idiotic, undeclared wars (which do much more to isolate US--than ALL the tariffs ever levied.) He will defend OUR interests--INSTEAD of everyone else's.

Ron Paul must have done well. The media coverage is so minimal!
