    Nevada's taxable sales up 9.6 percent in November

    LAS VEGAS (AP) — Taxable sales in Nevada jumped 9.6 percent in November compared with the same month last year, thanks to gains in restaurant, hotel, clothing and furniture spending the month before Christmas.

    Nevada Department of Taxation data released Monday tally $3.4 billion in sales, on which state officials collected $266 million in taxes. Those collections were up 8.8 percent over November 2010, and the $67 million that goes to the state general fund was up by a similar percentage.

    Sales rose in the state's two biggest population areas, with an 8.6 percent jump in Clark County and a 5.3 percent increase in Washoe County. Out of the state's 17 counties, only Carson City, Humboldt and White Pine counties saw a year-over-year drop in sales.

    Nevada's vital tourism industry saw a pre-holiday boost, with a 12.3 percent gain in accommodations spending and a 7.5 percent increase for restaurants and bars.

    Black Friday promotions may have pumped up the state's November retail numbers. Clothing stores saw a 14.8 percent increase in sales, while furniture sales jumped 15 percent and car dealers saw a 9.1 percent gain.

    The November report continues a 17-month streak of improved sales.

    Meanwhile, the already hard-hit construction industry was the only major sector to post a drop. Sales that month were 15.9 percent down over last year.

    Elsewhere in Nevada, Elko County sales were up nearly 36 percent, Nye County sales rose 15 percent, and Douglas County sales were up half a percent. Carson City sales were down 1.6 percent.

    For the fiscal year that began July 1, the portion of sales and use tax collections that fund state government were $8.9 million, or 2.7 percent, above projections made in May by the independent Economic Forum.

    The forum is an appointed panel of fiscal experts that forecasts revenues on which the state budget is based.
