New Independence Day: Resurgence Poster May Seem Very Familiar

It’s been 20 years since Will Smith, Jeff Goldblum, and Bill Pullman took on an alien invasion and defeated them using a computer virus and a couple of cigars in Roland Emmerich’s ‘Independence Day’.

The franchise returns in 2016 (without Will Smith, his character was killed off when he decided not the return) and a new trailer and poster have been released by 20th Century Fox.

It seems like the marketing team have taken a “if it aint broke” approach to the film’s poster. Check out the new one sheet below…

“We had twenty years to prepare…” the poster explains, but it’s almost like they’re referring to the poster designers rather than the aliens when you compare the new image to designs used for the first film.

Even the font remains unchanged.

This isn’t a criticism by the way, we kinda like the new poster, and the original is a bona fide classic so why go changing things?

Let’s just hope the sequel is just as good as the first one.

Liam Hemsworth stars as an ace fighter pilot who takes on the alien invasion 20 years after the first one. Mankind has spent the time since the first attack using extra-terrestrial tech to bolster earth’s defences, but the aliens are gearing up to return.

Here’s the official synopsis: We always knew they were coming back. After INDEPENDENCE DAY redefined the event movie genre, the next epic chapter delivers global spectacle on an unimaginable scale. Using recovered alien technology, the nations of Earth have collaborated on an immense defense program to protect the planet. But nothing can prepare us for the aliens’ advanced and unprecedented force. Only the ingenuity of a few brave men and women can bring our world back from the brink of extinction.
