Rey’s Speeder Explained

It looks as though Rey’s impressive new speeder is more of a Jakku tractor… as production designer Darren Gifford explains the utilitarian look of her new ride.

“It’s a beat up tractor that’s a hand-me-down or scavenged item,” he said. “It was meant to look like a piece of farm equipment, something that’s not going real fast compared to what a sports car would do. But it has high-end torque like a tractor that needs to haul a trailer.”

It certainly has a ring of ‘Tatooine Moisture Farming’ about it… and perhaps that’s the point. After all, with Rey holed up on a desert planet, scavenging junk to make a living, she seems to reflect that earthy, farmboy side of the Luke Skywalker we first met in ‘A New Hope’.

And that’s not the only thing she has in common with Luke…

Rey’s Origin Story Revealed

It turns out that Rey was ‘ditched’ on Jakku at the age of five… and has been scratching out a living as a junk scavenger ever since, with no idea who her family is, or why they left her.

“She’s been alone for a long time,” said Daisy Ridley. “When something occurs when you’re five, you know what went on but you don’t understand the reasoning. She’s hopeful for what lies ahead, whether that involves the past or not.”

“She’s never sat around a table and had a meal with someone else,” she added. “She works to feed herself, and she goes to sleep, and she gets up again. It is a sad life. The film, for Rey, is a journey of finding out that no one is no one.”

That could very easily have seen Rey turn to the Dark Side… if not for a bit of hope.

“Hope makes people good, a lot of the time,” said Ridley. “You hope for a brighter future, and resentment is outweighed.”

Finn and Poe’s First Encounter?

In the recent ‘Star Wars 7’ trailer, we saw a glimpse of Finn and Poe preparing for take-off amongst an airfield of X-Wings… but it seems they’ve definitely met before.

It’s long been rumoured that Finn and Poe Dameron first encounter each other while Finn is still a stormtrooper… and Poe Dameron is a prisoner of war. Of course, this image raises a lot of questions – how do they escape? And more importantly, why does Finn end up with Poe’s rather cool leather jacket?

Three-Way Lightsaber Duel?

It’s a scene we’ve already seen plenty of – with Kylo and Finn about to go head-to-head with lightsabers in a snowy woodland clearing… but it looks as though Rey will join the action.

As Kylo Ren ignites his now-iconic lightsaber, we still have no idea whether or not Rey is versed in the ways of The Force… or whether she has a sabre of her own. Either way, it looks as though she’s right there in the thick of it.

But who will come out on top?

The First Order – Remnants Of The Empire?

It’s no secret that the First Order has been heavily influenced by The Empire… but it might just go a bit further than that.

“Although Finn is no longer among them, Boyega says soldiers raised from childhood to serve this remnant of the scattered Imperial forces are fed propaganda about the heroes of the Rebellion,” explains EW.

They go on to reveal that Luke Skywalker has been tarred as a villain who destroyed the benevolent Empire, and it looks as though the First Order might be out for revenge. Or at least, to finish what Darth Vader started…

Captain Phasma’s Costume Was Created For Kylo Ren

It’s easily one of the coolest new designs seen in ‘The Force Awakens’ – the first appearance of a suit of chrome Stormtrooper armour. But it wasn’t always intended for Captain Phasma.

“I wish I could say to you, ‘Oh, but of course, the entire thing was designed specifically for me,'” said Gwendoline Christie. “If only that were true — if only!”

It turns out that the chrome-plated armour was designed for Kylo Ren… but director J.J. Abrams decided to use the new look to create another character.

“I just thought it would be really cool if we could find someone to play the part who was female, and I’m a fan of Game of Thrones; Gwendoline is in that show, [The Force Awakens casting director] Nina Gold casts it, she knew Gwendoline, obviously,“ he said. “We were very lucky to get to have her in the movie. She’s not in many scenes, but her presence is powerfully felt when she’s there.”

Star Wars Creature’s Backstory Unveiled

He’s one of the first creatures we saw from ‘The Force Awakens’ – Bobbajo appeared in a brief video with director J.J. Abrams… but we had no idea how he fits into the film until now.

“"He was envisaged as this sort of seller who would lumber his way to the market every day, selling these rather weird and strange creatures, which he had in the cages,” said ‘Star Wars 7’ creature creator, Neal Scanlan. “He’s very slow, he’s very laid back.”

Rey’s Staff Is… Just A Staff?

There’s already been much speculation about whether or not Rey’s staff has hidden lightsaber capabilities… and could even be the staff lightsaber of Darth Plagueis.

But it seems it’s just a staff.

“I mean everyone is praying that it’s Darth Plagueis’s staff. But… it’s just a staff,“ she said. “She’s a young woman in a galaxy by herself. It’s not primarily a weapon, it’s useful as well. It does all sorts of things roamin’ around Jakku. She uses it to defend herself. That’s really as far as it goes, unfortunately… It’s just a plain old staff!”

‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ heads to cinemas on 17 December 2015.
