Newcomers Soft But On-Demand Lively For ‘Club Life’, ‘Adult Beginners'; ‘I’ll See You In My Dreams’ Solid – Specialty B.O.

Going into its 3rd weekend, Bleecker Street’s I’ll See You In My Dreams was a robust rarity among specialties this weekend, which was not particularly kind to the pack of newcomers. GKIDS’ animated feature When Marnie Was There held OK after a small expansion in its 2nd frame, while Fox Searchlight’s Far From The Madding Crowd held fairly well in its 4th. And significantly, kudos goes to The Orchard for giving VOD estimates for its weekend debut, Club Life, which it is calculating at about $100K.

The Orchard joined an exclusive group of distributors led by RADiUS, in providing VOD estimates for one of its releases. Club Life, did a slight $5K in 8 theaters, but the company is estimating about $100K in VOD since becoming available on demand May 26. The title placed in the Top 25 in Drama and Indies on iTunes. The Orchard noted that Club Life received heavy social media support from P Diddy, David Guetta, Gal Gadot, AfroJack, Scott Disick, Scooter Braun, Paris Hilton and more, which pumped up its on-demand muscle, with a combined 80 million hits.

RADiUS also gave updated VOD numbers for Adult Beginners. The title has grossed an estimated $621K on-demand while its theatrical cume is now $104,586.

RADiUS opened the Ben and Joshua Safdie’s vérité-infused Heaven Knows What at the Sunshine in New York and the Arclight in L.A. A hit on the festival circuit, the feature hasn’t quite found its footing in theaters, though it had the highest PTA among this weekend’s limited newcomers that reported numbers today. Heaven Knows What grossed just north of $15K from the two locations, averaging $7,516. The Safdies’ 2010 feature, Go Get Rosemary opened in mid-May of that year in just one location, grossing $8,323.

Heaven Knows What has a very big cheerleader on its side. RADiUS co-president Tom Quinn called the film, “One of the most important works of the year,” noting that the company will roll out the title slowly. “We’re going to build every single engagement as if it were its own release,” said Quinn earlier this week. “There’s a lot of bullshit in what people think is ‘auteur,’ but [Ben and Joshua Safdie] are the real deal. I dare people not to see this movie… I think it’s that important.”

Only a few of the new specialty movies reported numbers as of late this morning. Magnolia Pictures opened Andrew Bujalski’s Results starring Guy Pearce, Cobie Smulders and Kevin Corrigan in three theaters in addition to on-demand. The bulk of its audience likely saw the film from the comfort of home, while a likely minority went for the group experience. The feature grossed $19K from its three runs, averaging $6,333. Magnolia will add a dozen locations including Los Angeles’ Nuart Theater June 5 with additional cities throughout the month.

And Kino Lorber opened festival favorite Tu Dors Nicole at Lincoln Plaza, grossing $4K. The Cannes Directors Fortnight debut was a New York Times Critics’ Pick. Kino Lorber will take the title to major art screens around the U.S. in the coming months.

GKIDS’ added 7 additional locations for its Japanese animated film When Marnie Was There in its second frame. The title grossed just over $33K in 9 theaters, averaging $3,669. The film opened in two theaters last weekend, grossing $32,590 over the four-day Memorial weekend holiday, averaging $16,295.

Bleecker Street continues to see success with its Brett Haley-directed feature I’ll See You In My Dreams with Blythe Danner, June Squibb, Rhea Perlman and Sam Elliott. Adding 59 runs in its third weekend, the title grossed a solid $516,161 in 85 theaters, averaging $6,072, giving it the second-highest theater average of all films in release, just behind Warner Bros.’ San Andreas ($14,089 PTA).

“It’s exciting to the what happened to the film in new markets,” said Bleecker Street’s Jack Foley. “The demand is holding well even as we move into new markets. It jumped 80% Friday to Saturday, which means it’ selling well in the matinees.” Foley added that I’ll See You In My Dreams did solidly in areas ranging from St. Louis to the San Francisco suburbs including Marin and Contra Costa counties and into San Jose.

The title also continued to perform robustly even as it expanded in New York. “It’s a small movie that is turning into a nice surprise for the exhibitors,” added Foley. “The new markets deliver and it holds well into the second or even third weekends.” Foley said Bleecker Street will add 10 to 12 markets next weekend and “very carefully” expand the title in existing markets including Chicago. “We’ll get I’ll See You In My Dreams in over 130 theaters next weekend.”
