2012 PAYOUT: Health insurer Aetna Inc. gave Chairman and CEO Mark T. Bertolini a 26 percent increase in total compensation last year, according to its annual proxy filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission.

THE PARTICULARS: Bertolini, 56, received a $977,159 salary, an $892,800 performance-based bonus, $11.1 million in stock awards and $256,971 in other compensation.

ABOUT AETNA: The nation's third-largest health insurer saw its earnings fall 17 percent last year to $1.66 billion, but revenue climbed. The insurer also increased the quarterly dividend it pays shareholders and launched a $5.7 billion acquisition of fellow insurer Coventry Health Care.
