News Summary: Amtrak unveils locomotives that will replace aging fleet in Northeast Corridor

Associated Press

ALL ABOARD: Amtrak unveils the first of 70 new locomotives at a plant in California to be used in the Northeast Corridor between Washington and Boston, and on Keystone Corridor trains between Philadelphia and Harrisburg, Pa.

NEW KIDS IN THE YARD: The locomotives, called Amtrak Cities Sprinters, are based on Siemens' latest European electric locomotive and will replace equipment in service for 20 to 30 years.

MORE ON TRACK: the new locomotives have computers that can diagnose problems in real time and a braking system capable of generating 100 percent of the energy it uses back to the electric grid.
