    BIG PENALTY: Google is paying a $22.5 million fine to settle the latest regulatory case questioning the company's respect for people's privacy and the integrity of its internal controls.

    WHAT HAPPENED: The fine wasn't about data collection, but what the government considers a broken promise over tracking on Apple's Safari browser.

    SIGNIFICANCE: The amount won't leave much of a financial dent at Google. Bad publicity may be the bigger blow for Google, which takes so much pride in its scruples that it has adopted "Don't Be Evil" as its corporate motto.
