KEY TRAINING: A $23 million training complex called the Running Right Leadership Academy aims to teach miners how to avoid injury and death in any disaster in one of the most dangerous work environments.
RESULT OF DISASTER: Born of a landmark $210 million settlement over the 2010 Upper Big Branch mine explosion that killed 29 men, the academy built by Alpha Natural Resources opens Thursday.
SAFE SIMULATION: The center features a 96,000-square-foot simulation coal mine, where instructors can create fire, floods, roof falls, worker injuries and more. It sits aboveground, but mimics a real mine — one with built-in surveillance cameras so people can watch from a classroom.
