News Summary: Tunisia beefs up security at desert oil sites after Algerian gas plant attack

Associated Press

SPECIAL PROTECTION: Tunisia is reinforcing the security around its oil and gas facilities in its southern deserts following an al-Qaida affiliated attack two weeks ago about 150 miles south, in Algeria, that led to the deaths of at least 37 hostages and 29 militants.

CLASHES: Tunisia has had a number of clashes with armed men in the south, near the borders of Algeria and Libya. The porous desert borders have long been crossed by smugglers and militants.

MILITANT HISTORY: While the leadership of the group which attacked the gas plant came from Algeria and its arms were most likely from Libya, 11 of the 32 militants were Tunisian.
