News of the World staff mocks Rebekah Brooks in final crossword clues

News of the World Staff Sneakily Mocks CEO in Crossword Puzzle

Orders from the top of News International allegedly tried to "ensure there were no libels or any hidden mocking messages of the chief executive" in the final edition of News of the World, the Daily Mail reports. But that didn't stop the paper's wily, bitter, and freshly unemployed staff from hiding clues mocking Rebekah Brooks in the crossword puzzle in the final issue of the paper.

Clues to the Quickie puzzle included: "Brook," "stink," "catastrophe," and "digital protection." Answers included "stench," "racket," and "tart." The Cryptic Crossword had clues ranging from "criminal enterprise," "mix in prison," and "string of recordings." If these still seems like mere coincidences, note the clue for 24 Across, which reads "Woman stares wildly at calamity." The Telegraph speculated that it was a reference to the photo of Brooks staring from the window of a car as she left News International's Wapping headquarters following the announcement the News of the World was to be shut down. The answer to that clue? "Disaster."

The paper's staff has been expressing their fury against Brooks, with one journalist scolding her for her "arrogance" in a brief speech, and another secretly making a recording of that off-the-record meeting. No doubt Brooks was on her guard: a source told the Daily Mail that she had ordered two "very senior" Sun journalists "to go through every line on every page with a fine toothcomb." But the source added, "But they failed and we've had the last laugh."

I keep reading how some people have never heard of Brooks or this paper until reading this story. you learn the truth when you turn off fox noise!!! and Brook's is going bald banging her head under Murdoch's desk!!!

You know, everyone has to bring it to Murdoch or Fox, when it was this lady acting stupidly. It doesn't mean every single person was in on it, and obviously from this article, her co workers did not approve at all of this bs. So what exactly does this have anything to do with FOX news? You add the the hyperbole and essentail lies that propogte from ignorance and typical follow the pack mntality.
      • Rob 10 mths ago
Seriously? She looks like a tranny, I'm sure Mr. Murdock can afford much prettier "secretaries".

It is truly amazng that only Fox News seems to be the fount of all untruth.......wow. News ideally is neither right nor left but the sample of posts here have an amazing liberal bias. Hummmm
      • eightmandu 10 mths ago
Yeah, that public with it's unfair liberal bias. Maybe because most Republicans don't use the internet, or even read.

Well, Rupert Murdock single handedly (by owning the politicians) have ruined this world. The devil's coming to collect on his soul. You know what? I'm glad I'm alive to see it. OH, and yes, if you watched something other than FOX you'd realize that they are the fount of all untruth.

The peon employees get fired while that #$%$ who ordered the hacking gets out of a sticky situation with guaranteed employment elsewhere. Rupert is probably f*&%ing her.

Unemployment numbers are comprised of those that are in the job market for the past 30 days. It does not include those that have not been in the job market in the last 30 days: people who have given up looking; those that have gone off unemployment because it has run out. One solution to unemployment is "High Speed University" check it out

There should be investigations of The Now York Post, Fox News, and the Wall Street Journal. Does anyone think an editor makes such decisions and the owners don't know? The laid off workers got even with Brooks in a crossword puzzle. Wow! That's really settling a score. Besides, the journalists are not innocent either. They didn't know where the info was coming from, and they didn't write their garbage? Too bad there is such a huge moronic audience. Garbage goes to garbage.

Mark twain said it best.... If you don't read the newspaper you are uninformed. If you read the newspaper you are misinformed. The World has lost nothing except a few unscrupulous people who have to find another outlet for their sputterings. How can Murdock be resposible for every minute action by some worthless employees. Another case for how the few can spoil it for the many.

The hang em high crowd seems to be mostly of the liberal party.......remnants of the KKK mindset I guess......they were Democrats after all

Awesome! Good one, employees! Glad you were able to get in a last dig at the #$%$
    • Matta G  •  10 mths ago
Whatever. If anyone at that paper had a shred of journalistic integrity they wouldn't be out of a job right now. But what do you expect from a rag owned by Rupert Murdoch?
    • Rodney  •  10 mths ago
Here is something to think about. If you think only one new organization is doing dirty tricks to get ahead, then what are the other news organizations doing to stay even? If you distrust government to complain about it, then why do you want them to control or regulate newspapers, which are suppose to be above politics? Who/what will you trust then?

I like investigative reports that have no agenda but to research the truth, unless it creats danger for people or causes concern for families like this phone tapping did. Morals are important, even in a news agency. But the biggest problem I think is that too many people want to know every little detail about everyone's life but their own.

We can not afford to have controlled news editors, but at the same time we can not afford to have news editors run amock on people's lives for the sake of a story that isn't important.

As far as Murdock is concerned. Just another rich sob getting richer because we buy their stuff.

Canada's Radio Act requires that "a licenser may not broadcast ... any false or misleading news." The provision has kept Fox News and right-wing talk radio out of Canada and helped make Canada a model for liberal democracy and freedom. As a result of that law, Canadians enjoy high quality news coverage, including the kind of foreign affairs and investigative journalism that flourished in this country before Ronald Reagan abolished the "Fairness Doctrine" in 1987. Political dialogue in Canada is marked by civility, modesty, honesty, collegiality, and idealism that have pretty much disappeared on the US airwaves. When Stephen Harper moved to abolish the anti-lying provision of the Radio Act, Canadians rose up to oppose him fearing that their tradition of honest non-partisan news would be replaced by the toxic, overtly partisan, biased and dishonest news coverage familiar to American citizens who listen to Fox News and talk radio. Harper's proposal was timed to facilitate the launch of a new right-wing network, "Sun TV News" which Canadians call "Fox News North."

Harper, often referred to as "George W. Bush's Mini Me," is known for having mounted a Bush-like war on government scientists, data collectors, transparency, and enlightenment in general. He is a wizard of all the familiar tools of demagoguery; false patriotism, bigotry, fear, selfishness and belligerent religiosity.

Harper's attempts to make lying legal on Canadian television are a stark admission that right-wing political ideology can only dominate national debate through dishonest propaganda. Since corporate profit-taking is not an attractive vessel for populism, a political party or broadcast network that makes itself the tool of corporate and financial elites must lie to make its agenda popular with the public. In the Unites States, Fox News and talk radio, the sock puppets of billionaires and corporate robber barons, have become the masters of propaganda and distortion on the public airwaves. Fox News' notoriously biased and dishonest coverage of the Wisconsin's protests is a prime example of the brand of news coverage Canada has smartly avoided.

Please study your history folks. Nazi Germany was a culture of victimization, and that was used by the national socialist party to enable extremists and thugs to gain control of the governments. Talk like US and THEM, the "other" like sarah palin has done is this type of language.
THe US middle class is in for some tough times if we can't get this economy moving. AND DEPENDING ON THE TOP 1% OF RICH FOLKS TO SPEND US OUT OF IT IS RIDICULOUS. TAX CUTS FOR THE RICH ARE MEANINGLESS. THEY DON'T GO OUT AND BUY A LAWNMOWER, GET A HAIRCUT OR BUY A PIZZA IN YOUR LITTLE TOWN. HOW DOES LETTING RICH FOLKS KEEP MORE OF THEIR MONEY HELP SMALL TOWNS ACROSS AMERICA?

      THE FALL OF THE WICKET
Some people think it's always possible to get away with doing and saying hateful things against the masses once you have money. Raush Limbaugh found out how wrong that was when he tried to buy a NFL team. it's now Murdoch time. other haters like Michael Medved and Neil Bortz who hate the poor and homeless will learn their lesson in due time.

Oh, come on. Clinton was having sex with Monica in the Oval Office. So you want to investigate Murdoch? You sound like a child.
      .
Millions are already being spent by MediaMatters founded by Hillary Clinton and funded by Soros are working on bringing Murdoch down and our tax money is paying for it. You people don't seem to get it. Our country is great because we have elections, free speech, and a free press. The Dems want to shut the right up and that would make it easy to tell the story their way without any contradiction or differing opinion. You do not realize how dangerous that is to a free country. It wouldn't be free anymore.
      .

Does anyone believe that we are immune from the things Murdoch did in Britain? Lets start an investigation of his organizations her. The right will say he is clean so they won't object! We could spend 74 million dollars investigating Murdoch looking for anything we can find just like the right wing did with Clinton.
