13-Year-Old Pennsylvania Girl Found in Creek Died From Accidental Drowning, No Foul Play Suspected: Police

Authorities say the cause of death of a 13-year-old Pennsylvania girl whose body was found in a stream Sunday was accidental drowning and no foul play is suspected, PEOPLE confirms.

Shevy McGiffin, of Clarion, was last seen about 6:45 p.m. Friday when she walked from home to the Dollar General store to buy a coloring book, police said. Cashiers reported observing her make the purchase, but afterward the young girl vanished.

Her body was discovered just before 4 p.m. Sunday afternoon by members of the Clarion Volunteer Fire Department in a forest stream that feeds the Clarion River near her house.

Pennsylvania State Police troopers investigating the scene "have determined that she was the victim of an accidental drowning," according to a statement released Monday and obtained by PEOPLE. "An autopsy conducted today revealed that the teenager had drowned and that no foul play is suspected in her death."

Scrapes and bruises located on the young girl likely resulted from the body being pulled downstream, authorities said after the autopsy performed by Dr. Eric Vey at the Erie County Coroner's Office, reports ExploreClarion.com.

Shevy's great aunt, Barbara McGiffin, said, "She was a sweet girl. She had just been pushed from place to place in living," according to CBSPittsburgh.

"She was a shy child, she kept to herself," McGiffin said. "Why this had to happen I don't know, we don't question the Lord on why things have to happen but ... I did."
