With Biden stepping down as nominee, Democrats make history book for the wrong reasons | Opinion

There’s a tough reality that Democrats, progressives and liberals are afraid to face: The history books will remember that the party that pushed out their president was not the party whose candidate was convicted of a felony or said he’d act like a dictator on day one.

The Republican National Convention was like something out of the Prime Video show, “The Boys.” Before Donald Trump took the stage, overdramatic 80s rock was followed by a rock/hip-hop performance by Bud Light lover Kid Rock and then a pro-wrestling style promo by UFC President and CEO Dana White.

Sadly, such a display might not only be reflective of the Republican Party. It might soon be reflective of the rest of America. President Joe Biden stepped down after everyone from voters, advocates and donors called on him to do so.

Opinion

They will consider this progress despite the billions of dollars worth of student loan debt Biden relieved. They think getting a younger president is a step in the right direction, instead of remembering Biden’s efforts at lowering inflation and adding millions of jobs while maintaining the lowest unemployment rate the longest in U.S. history.

Democrats set the wrong precedent

Belief in America and the institutions that distinguished our nation has diminished, no one is debating that. But what should be up for debate is the rash, foolish push by Democrats to look for another candidate less than four months before one of the most important elections in our country’s history.

That might be enough time to rally around a new candidate but it is not enough time to start a whole new campaign that must capture the attention and trust of millions of Americans. Running this race under these circumstances is a burden and a huge uphill battle.

Biden and Kamala Harris knew how to beat Trump. Having them together demonstrated more strength than changing a presidential ticket this soon before an election. It’s never happened before and other Democratic favorites, Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer and California Gov. Gavin Newsom, are untested in national politics.

Elections are not just about a candidate. They are about translating messages that speak to voters. Biden had a record worthy of support from Democrats. Instead of running against Trump, Democrats ran against Biden. Forcing him to step down sends a message that the Democrats care more about social media noise and polls than substance and results.

Biden administration must continue its work

Biden is old at 82 but it takes an administration to create change and what his cabinet has been able to do, from infrastructure to COVID relief, deserves a second term.

It’s the bottom of the ninth inning and you don’t take out your relief pitcher with three outs left. For my Swifties, if it’s the last song of the Eras Concert, and you don’t play “Teardrops on My Guitar.” You play “Fortnight” or “Lavender Haze.”

Whatever you wanna say about Trump, the Republicans are all in on him, for four years or more, which is scary. They see him as someone who will deliver what they want.

For liberals to not have that same energy for Biden, after four years of leadership that worked, shows that they didn’t like him from the beginning. His message of decency fell flat.

Democrats have to be honest about what they are doing by pushing out a president with a solid record while a man unfit for the presidency controls his party with ease.

This is what happened to Democrats on reproductive rights. The left didn’t think that Roe v. Wade would ever be repealed, while conservatives and Republicans said “Watch this.”

Democrats have nothing else to complain about now. They got what they wanted, but does that mean they will ditch the pessimism?

This is America. Elections are won by getting behind ideals and beliefs and lost by giving into fear and whining.
