Big Lots to close 6 Sacramento-area stores amid possible bankruptcy. Here’s where
Big Lots plans to close to 40 locations across the United States amid a possible bankruptcy, including several sites in the Sacramento region.
In a recent quarterly report, the Ohio-based discount retail chain said it has “substantial doubt” in its ability to survive amid declining sales and high costs.
“In 2024, the U.S. economy has continued to face macroeconomic challenges, including elevated inflation, which has adversely impacted the buying power of our customers,” the retail chain wrote in the financial disclosure.
Big Lots has been tight-lipped about which stores will close.
A call to company representatives on Monday morning wasn’t immediately returned.
Which Big Lots stores are closing in Sacramento area?
Big Lots recently updated its site to show upcoming closures.
As of Monday morning, a total of six stores in the Sacramento area were listed as closing, according to its site:
It’s unclear when the locations will officially close their doors.
Will other Northern California locations stay open?
The chain’s stores in North Highlands, Elk Grove, Roseville and Lodi will remain open, according to its site.
Big Lots joins a list of restaurant and restaurant chains that have abruptly closed locations due to financial constraints including Red Lobster, Cracker Barrel, Rue 21 Conn’s HomePlus.
What is Big Lots?
Big Lots describes itself as a destination for affordable brand-name products, from electronics and home decor to toys and seasonal items.
The company was founded in 1967 as Consolidated International, Inc., according to its site.
Big Lots founder Sol Shenk was known for “making crazy closeout deals, particularly on auto parts and all kinds of vehicles,” the site said.
There are currently more than 1,000 open Big Lots stores across the country, with 109 in California.
