Bikes, motorcycles banned from road in Rancho Palos Verdes due to ‘extreme land movement’
Two-wheeled vehicles, like bicycles and motorcycles, are now banned from a busy road in Rancho Palos Verdes after the city council deemed it to be too unsafe.
Palos Verdes Drive South is now closed to those vehicles after a unanimous vote from the council on Tuesday. The danger on the windy, two-mile stretch of road comes from extreme land movement, the council says.
“Sometimes, fissures, dips, bumps, other pavement irregularities are forming, and although four-wheeled vehicles can usually navigate these, given the warning signs and slowing down, the same cannot be said for two-wheeled vehicles,” said Public Works Director Ramzi Awwad, at Tuesday’s city council meeting.

The two-lane road has been subject to concern from local residents after a series of storms earlier this year caused slides and erosion to the pavement.
“If you’ve ever traveled through here it’s kind of easy to see why [the city council] would come to this decision,” said KTLA’s Ellina Abovian. “It is very windy, very difficult to get to this area. Very dangerous, especially if you’re in a two-wheel vehicle.”
The city council plans to reevaluate the ban in about six months, Abovian reported. It wasn’t immediately clear what the recommended detours in the area would be.
