Donald Trump endorses 'true friend of MAGA' Derek Schmidt in Kansas GOP primary

Former President Donald Trump has endorsed Derek Schmidt, wading into a contested Republican primary for one of Kansas' seats in Congress.

"Derek Schmidt was a fantastic Attorney General of Kansas, a State I love and won by large margins in 2016 and 2020!" Trump said in a Friday evening post on his social media site, Truth Social.

"An America First Patriot and a true friend of MAGA, Derek is now running for Congress, where he will work tirelessly to Grow the Economy, Secure the Border, Uphold the Rule of Law, Support our Veterans, Strengthen our Military, Defend our always under siege Second Amendment, and Champion our Incredible Farmers and Ranchers.

"Derek Schmidt has my Complete and Total Endorsement - HE WILL NEVER LET YOU DOWN!"

Schmidt is one of five candidates running in the GOP primary for the Republican-leaning 2nd Congressional District. The district includes Topeka and covers much of eastern Kansas, minus most of the Kansas City metro.

Other contenders are Jeff Kahrs — a former Trump appointee in the president's administration — and cattleman Shawn Tiffany, while Michael A. Ogle and Chad Young are considered longshots.

Schmidt thanked Trump in a post on X.

"President Trump has united the Republican Party and many Americans who love our country in a historic movement to put America First," Schmidt said. "I am honored to receive his endorsement. His strength under adversity like we saw this month in Pennsylvania is exactly what we need to get America running again. We will secure our border, make daily life more affordable for families, and stop federal bureaucrats from overregulating our lives. I am excited to work with President Trump to Make America Great Again. I ask for the vote of every Kansan in the Second Congressional District to help get the job done."
