Driver arrested on suspicion of homicide after hitting, killing teen girl near Balboa Fun Zone in Newport Beach

A man who police say may have been under the influence of alcohol hit and killed a 14-year-old girl on the Balboa Peninsula in Newport Beach on Saturday night, police say.

Police responded to reports of a collision between a vehicle and a pedestrian around 6:47 p.m. in the area of Balboa Boulevard and Palm Street, about one block from the Balboa Fun Zone.

The pedestrian, a 14-year-old girl, was pronounced dead at the scene. Her identity was not immediately made available.

The vehicle’s driver, identified by police as 30-year-old Fontana resident Joseph Alcazar, remained at the scene. He was arrested on suspicion of homicide by traffic fatality and cruelty to a child.

Police believe alcohol may have been a factor in the collision.
