Driver dies after single-vehicle crash on Interstate 5 in Sacramento, authorities say

A person died Monday in a single-vehicle crash on Interstate 5 near Sacramento’s South Land Park neighborhood, according to the California Highway Patrol.

A motorist drove at high speeds and cut through southbound lanes near the 43rd Avenue off-ramp before crashing into a center divide, according to the CHP’s dispatch log, which said officers were alerted to the incident about 7:20 a.m.

A person was taken to a hospital in critical condition, said Capt. Justin Sylvia, a spokesman for the Sacramento Fire Department.

The driver was pronounced dead, authorities said. The motorist in the vehicle was not wearing a seat belt, according to the dispatch log.

Officers closed roads north of Seamus Avenue as investigators collected evidence for the incident. The lanes have since been reopened.

Officer Mark Leavitt, a spokesman for the CHP’s South Sacramento office, did not immediately return a request for comment.
