Fatal head-on collision closes Pacific Coast Highway

One person died and two others were injured when two vehicles collided head-on in Malibu Thursday evening on a stretch of Pacific Coast Highway that is notorious for deadly crashes.

The collision occurred around 10 p.m. near Carbon Canyon Road.

Video from the scene showed a white sedan with severe front-end damage in the middle of the highway and a black SUV, also with front-end damage, off to the side.

One victim was pronounced dead at the scene, while two others were hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries, authorities said.

Both directions of Pacific Coast Highway remained closed Friday morning.

This collision occurred in roughly the same area where four Pepperdine students were killed by a driver in October 2023. Since then, local and state authorities have implemented several measures to improve safety on PCH, where at least 59 people have died since 2010.

Those measures include new signs, cameras, increased patrols and a recently launched public safety campaign featuring Malibu resident and Star Wars star Mark Hamill.
