MT. ANGEL — Politicians and nonprofit leaders gathered with family and friends Tuesday to pay their respects to longtime Oregon lawmaker Peter Courtney.

A funeral Mass was held at St. Mary Catholic Church, the same church where he and wife Margie’s three sons, Peter, Sean and Adam, were baptized.

Sean Courtney, their middle son, spoke after the Mass, along with Phil Bentley, his dad’s former chief of staff.

Peter Courtney, the longest-serving legislator and Senate president in Oregon history, died July 16. He was 81.

Mt. Angel Police escorted a procession after the Mass to Calvary Cemetery for burial.
