Hazardous air quality plagues Southern California after fireworks of July 4

Independence Day may be over, but the poor air quality from fireworks remains.

KTLA’s Air Quality Map of Southern California shows wide swaths of the area have air quality that is unhealthy — meaning the air quality index is between 151 and 200 — with some areas listed as being very unhealthy, with an AQI 201-300.

The map, which uses data from the South Coast Air Quality Management District, shows the area near Azusa and Glendora is hazardous, which indicates an AQI of 301 to 500.

These elevated air pollution levels are likely from the numerous fireworks set off in the area for the Independence Day holiday, as the South Coast AQMD warned that air quality would be negatively impacted by the explosive celebrations.

Fireworks can be breathtaking in more ways than one

The pollution from fireworks adds to the smog and industrial emissions already present in the area, hurting air quality. Small “backyard” fireworks can hurt the nearby area even more, and if fireworks cause a fire, that adds even more pollution.

To avoid health impacts like heart attacks, asthma aggravation, coughing or difficulty breathing, the AQMD offered the following tips:

  • Limit exposure by remaining indoors with windows and doors closed, or seek alternate shelter

  • Avoid vigorous physical activity

  • Run air conditioning and/or an air purifier. If possible, do not use swamp coolers or whole house fans that bring in outside air.
