Heat advisory issued for South Florida. Temperatures could feel as high as 110 degrees on July 4

The National Weather Service issued a heat advisory Wednesday for parts of Miami-Dade and Broward counties through July 4 as temperatures could feel as high as 110 degrees.

The heat advisory will be in effect from 10 a.m. July 3 and run until 8 p.m. July 4 through inland and Metro areas. Residents and visitors can expect peak heat index values — which includes temperatures plus humidity — to feel between 105 and 110 degrees on both Wednesday and Thursday afternoons, the weather service said.

Nighttime temperatures will drop slightly but are expected to feel like at least 90 degrees.

According to the National Weather Service, there is a 40% chance of precipitation on Thursday, Independence Day. The likelihood of rain will increase as the day progresses, which may affect outdoor festivities including picnics and fireworks displays.

Here’s what you can do to protect yourself from the heat:

Spend time in air-conditioned buildings like neighborhood community centers, libraries, malls or movie theaters.

Reduce physical activity and move to shaded areas.

Do outdoor activities in the cooler morning or evening hours.

Wear lightweight, light-colored and loose-fitting clothing.

Drink plenty of water and electrolyte-rich drinks, and don’t wait until you’re thirsty to drink more.

Limit or avoid caffeine and alcohol because they can be dehydrating.

Wear a hat and sunscreen to protect against harmful UV rays when outside.

If you feel lightheaded, confused, weak or faint, seek immediate medical attention by calling 911.
