House Democrat endorses Kamala Harris one day after supporting a GOP effort against her

  • Rep. Don Davis of North Carolina endorsed Harris in a statement on Friday.

  • On Thursday, he joined 5 other Democrats backing a GOP effort to slam her handling of the border.

  • Davis, who represents a competitive district, was careful to mention the border in his endorsement.

On Thursday, Rep. Don Davis of North Carolina condemned Kamala Harris for her actions as "Border Czar." On Friday, he endorsed her bid for president.

Davis joined five other Democrats who voted for a GOP resolution on Thursday criticizing Harris' "failure to secure" the border and calling her a "Border Czar." While the Biden administration never gave Harris that official title, it did task her with addressing the root causes of migration.

Friday brought an apparent about-face, though, as Davis threw his support behind Harris in a statement, saying that "the stakes of this presidential election are incredibly high, with far-reaching implications." He also offered his advice about a vice presidential pick, suggesting that Gov. Roy Cooper, a fellow North Carolinian, would be a wise choice.

Yet Davis, a centrist Democrat in a competitive district, didn't leave his qualms about the southern border too far in the rearview mirror. The second paragraph of his two-paragraph statement said that "the administration and Congress must address the concerns of the southern border."

Republicans are latching onto the border as a line of attack against Harris and Democrats down the ballot. Advertisements slamming her handling of immigration are already dominating the airwaves, Punchbowl News reported.

The attacks aren't deterring coveted endorsements from people with more star power than Davis. Over the past few days, political, financial, and cultural figures have thrown their weight behind Harris, from the Obamas to some of Hollywood's biggest stars.
