López Obrador “does not rule out” U.S. troops entering México to arrest ‘El Mayo’

Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador on Monday did not rule out the possibility of U.S. forces entering México to arrest drug traffickers Joaquín Guzmán López, son of Chapo Guzmán, and Ismael ‘El Mayo’ Zambada.

“The intrusion of U.S. Armed Forces is not ruled out, but there is no evidence,” the president stated during his morning press conference.

The Mexican leader questioned the detention of both drug traffickers, who were arrested on Thursday in El Paso, Texas, after disembarking from a plane that left México without the Mexican government knowing.

López Obrador also pointed out that although there were negotiations between the U.S. government and Guzmán López for the drug lord to surrender in that country, México was not informed about these alleged agreements.

“No, there are no reports,” he stressed.

However, he indicated that “there is also the precedent, as the U.S. government said, that they were making agreements with Guzmán.”

“That is what they have been saying for some time, even mentioning agreements from two or three years ago, and they say it was a few weeks ago. But there is also the version that they had been negotiating with him for a long time,” López Obrador said.

He also expressed dissatisfaction with the information provided by US authorities to Mexico regarding the two arrests.

“No (I am not satisfied). There is still a lot missing. We need to know where they came from (...) because at first, the Mexican Migration Service sent the flight plan from Hermosillo, a small plane to New México, but then it was mentioned that they did not leave from there and there is no reliable information,” he stressed.

He did not rule out meeting with President Joe Biden to discuss the case.

“Yes (I would seek out Biden). However, I think he will give us all the information; we trust that. What is happening, I guess, is that they are consulting, but they also expected us to resolve this situation. I think we are clear when we manifest that we want all the information available,” he said.

Despite his complaints, he pointed out that his government maintains cooperation with the United States in the fight against drug trafficking.

“We have always fought against drug trafficking, but we make sure that it is done by our decision, not as it used to be when U.S. agencies were in charge of this matter in México. The Mérida Initiative no longer exists, but we cooperate because it is a humanitarian issue,” he highlighted.

Finally, given the risk of violence in Sinaloa, where the cartel led by Chapo’s sons is based, he called for avoiding confrontation and promoting peace.

“Those involved in these illegal activities know that confrontation will not solve anything, that they are putting other people’s lives at risk, and that there is no need for the suffering of families. Violence is not the answer; I trust there will be no confrontation,” he said.

El presidente mexicano, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, no descartó este lunes la intrusión de Fuerzas Armadas estadounidenses en México para el arresto de los narcotraficantes Joaquín Guzmán López, hijo del Chapo Guzmán, e Ismael el Mayo Zambada, aunque aceptó que no hay pruebas.

“No se descarta (la intrusión de Fuerzas Armadas de Estados Unidos) pero no hay pruebas”, aseveró el mandatario durante su conferencia de prensa matutina.

El gobernante mexicano cuestionó la detención de ambos narcotraficantes, arrestados el jueves en El Paso, Texas, tras bajar de un avión que salió de México sin conocimiento del Gobierno.

López Obrador señaló también que, aunque trascendió que existieron negociaciones entre el Gobierno estadounidense y Guzmán López para que el capo se entregara en aquel país, lo cierto es que tampoco informaron a México sobre estos supuestos acuerdos.

“No, no hay informes”, enfatizó.

Sin embargo, indicó que “hay también el antecedente, como el mismo Gobierno de Estados Unidos lo está asegurando, de que venían haciendo acuerdos con Guzmán (López)“.

“Eso es lo que ellos dicen de tiempo atrás, incluso hablan hasta de 2 o 3 años de acuerdos, dicen que hace algunas semanas, pero hay también la versión de que llevaban más tiempo con acuerdos con él”, dijo.

También expresó su inconformidad por la información que han proporcionado las autoridades estadounidenses a México sobre ambas detenciones.

“No (estoy conforme). Todavía falta mucho, falta saber de dónde salieron (...) porque inicialmente mandaron de Migración de México el plan de vuelo de Hermosillo, una avioneta a Nuevo México, pero luego se menciona de que no salieron de ahí y no se tiene una información confiable”, enfatizó.

Y no descartó reunirse con el presidente Joe Biden para hablar sobre el caso.

“Sí (buscaría a Biden). Pero creo que nos va a pasar toda la información, tenemos confianza en eso, lo que pasa, me imagino, es que están consultando, pero también esperaban que nosotros definiéramos esta situación y yo creo que está quedando de manifiesto que queremos toda la información disponible”, comentó.

Pese a sus reclamos, señaló que su Gobierno mantiene cooperación con Estados Unidos en el combate al narcotráfico.

“Siempre hemos combatido el tráfico de drogas, hemos cuidado nada más que se haga por decisión nuestra, que no sea como antes que las agencias de Estados Unidos eran las que mandaban en México en esta materia, ya hay orden, ya no existe el llamado Plan Mérida, pero cooperamos porque es un asunto humanitario”, destacó.

Finalmente, ante el riesgo de violencia en Sinaloa, base del cártel liderado por los hijos del Chapo, pidió evitar enfrentamientos y apostar por la paz.

“Quienes se dedican a estas actividades ilícitas saben que no resuelve nada con la confrontación, que van ahí a exponer la vida de otros seres humanos y que para qué el sufrimiento de las familias, que no es el camino la violencia, yo confío que no va a haber confrontación, lo deseo”, expresó.
