Land Park’s favorite burger restaurant is closing. Here’s why and when

Local hamburger restaurant Dad’s Kitchen is closing its Land Park location after 14 years, according to a Facebook post on Wednesday afternoon.

Customers will have until July 28 to scarf down jalapeño popper burgers, garlic fries and tequila-marinated chicken sandwiches at 2968 Freeport Blvd., the post read. A second location in Fair Oaks’ Sunset Oaks Plaza will remain open.

“The last two weeks will be a celebration of our long term employees, our valued patrons, and the energy that was built in this fun and funky space,” the Facebook post read. “We hope you join us in raising a glass, jamming out to some live music and giving hugs and high fives for being a great chapter in Land Park history.”

Dad’s first opened in 2008, but didn’t last long. Former Anchor Brewing Co. sales representative Julio Peix and business partner Christine “Sukhbir” Collins were fans, though, and reopened the burger-and-beer-bar under the same name in 2010. They followed that with the Fair Oaks location at 8928 Sunset Ave. in 2013.

As Dad’s gained Sacramento-area fans, it also found nationwide fame on the Food Network. Guy Fieri highlighted the restaurant in a 2010 episode of his hit show “Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives, focusing on three dishes: beer-battered onion rings, the Hot Blonde chicken panini and the Dad’s Burger.

Celebrity chef Stuart O’Keefe sung the praises of that burger for 2018 episode of the Food Network show “The Best Thing I Ever Ate.” Indeed, former chef Luis Becerra’s bacon-and-blue-cheese-encrusted creation with beef from Napa’s 5 Dot Ranch and buns from Davis’ Village Bakery was Dad’s most popular menu item for famous people and no-names alike.
