Lee’s Summit man sentenced for 2021 deadly head-on crash on 50 Hwy

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — A 37-year-old Lee’s Summit man has been sentenced for a 2021 head-on crash that left another man dead.

A Jackson County judge sentenced Joseph A. Cook last Thursday, July 25, to eight years in prison for involuntary manslaughter and six months in the county jail for a misdemeanor count of DWI with a recommendation that he be placed in the Missouri Department of Correction’s 120-day “shock incarceration” program first.

Cook pleaded guilty to the two charges back in March. He was charged back in 2021 after a toxicology report showed a blood alcohol level more than three times the legal limit.

The crash was reported on Saturday, March 6, 2021, when police received reports of a truck driving in the wrong lane of 50 Highway. Minutes later, a call reported a head-on collision between two Ford F-150s.

When officers arrived, they found both vehicles on fire. Both vehicles were stuck together.

Other people had stopped to help and had been able to help Cook from his car after the crash. However, the fire had prevented the good Samaritans from helping the other driver.

Kevin A. Daniels was later found in the compartment of the other truck after the fire had been extinguished. He had been killed in the crash.
