Long Beach teen fatally shoots man in victim’s garage, police say

A 19-year-old Long Beach man is behind bars after he allegedly shot and killed a 44-year-old acquaintance in the victim’s garage Tuesday afternoon.

Long Beach Police officers found Jeffrey Poorman, a Long Beach resident, inside his garage in the 5900 block of Lime Avenue at about 1:30 p.m., the Police Department said in a news release.

Poorman had sustained “multiple gunshot wounds to his upper body,” and he was pronounced dead at the scene.

While the motive and circumstances of the shooting remain under investigation, police identified Mathew De Diego as the suspected shooter. The two were “previously known to one another,” the release said.

De Diego was arrested later Tuesday in the 5000 block of Gardenia Avenue, and he is being held at Long Beach City Jail in lieu of $3 million bail.

“In less than seven hours, LBPD personnel identified and safely arrested this violent murder suspect, once again demonstrating the focus we will maintain on capturing those willing to victimize others,” Chief Wally Hebeish said in the release. “We do not tolerate gun violence in our community. Our detectives, officers, and professional staff are working around the clock to keep our city safe.”

Police believe more witnesses may have information about the shooting, and they’re asked to call Detectives Michael Hubbard or Jesus Espinoza at 562-570-7244.
