Man arrested in connection with homeless woman’s death, Sacramento police say

A man suspected of killing a homeless woman outside of Loaves and Fishes charity services on Tuesday has been arrested, the Sacramento Police Department announced.

Kevin Birdsong, 54, of Sacramento was taken into custody Tuesday evening by homicide detectives, police spokesman Officer Anthony Gamble said Wednesday.

He was being held without bail and faces one felony murder charge. He is expected to be arraigned Thursday afternoon in Sacramento Superior Court.

Police were called out to Loaves and Fishes on the 1300 block of North C Street in the River District early Tuesday for reports of a fight. First responders found a woman unresponsive with a puncture wound, and she was pronounced dead at the scene.

The landmark charity, which feeds and offers services to the unhoused, closed Tuesday following the death. Officials declined to give details about the altercation or whether it was on the grounds of the facility.

“What we can say is that this guest is known, & loved throughout our campus community,” Loaves and Fishes officials said. “She was a regular at Maryhouse, Friendship Park, & our Dining Room. It is here that she was seen & heard; we laughed & cried with her more times than we can count.”
