Man who escaped from California prison in 2011 apprehended in New York City

A man who escaped from a Northern California prison over a decade ago was located and arrested in New York City.

According to a press release issued by the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation, the suspect is a man named Eduardo Hernandez.

Hernandez was sentenced on July 6, 2005, in Los Angeles County to 13 years in state prison for carjacking with the enhancement of use of a firearm.

While he was about six-and-a-half years into his sentence, Hernandez walked away from Delta Conservation Camp, located in Suisun City in Solano County, on Nov. 15, 2011.

After more than 13 years on the run, Hernandez was apprehended in New York City on May 20, CDCR said. The exact circumstances regarding how investigators tracked him down were not released.

He is set to be extradited back to California, where his case will be referred to the Solano County District Attorney for possible escape charges.

99% of all people who left a California adult institution, camp or community-based program without permission since 1977 have been caught, CDCR said.
