A Sacramento Superior Court jury found a man guilty of killing his roommate and shooting two others in a Vineyard home rented from a former Sacramento Kings player.

Seven men and five women returned with the verdict late Thursday after deliberating for about three hours in the case against Trey Hallman, 30. He was found guilty of first-degree murder in the death of Terrell Brown, 26, and two counts of attempted murder of Blakye Ares and Damon Saunders.

Hallman, who has pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity, will now face a second phase of the trial in which jurors must determine if he was insane at the time he carried out his attack.

Trey Devaughn Hallman, 25, is wanted by Sacramento County Sheriff’s deputies in connection with a shooting Friday, Aug. 23, 2019, on the 10000 block of Clover Ranch Drive in the Vineyard section of south Sacramento.

Fourteen bullets ripped through a home leased by former Kings player Willie Cauley-Stein on early morning Aug. 23, 2019, disturbing the quiet neighborhood’s peace. The five-bedroom and five-bathroom estate on the corner of Clover Ranch Drive and Vineyard Road was valued at $1.2 million in 2019.

Cauley-Stein, who at the time of the shooting had moved on to play with the Golden State Warriors, was not at the property at the time of the shooting. The 7-foot center played last season for an Italian hoops team and could not be reached for comment.

Prosecutor Samuel Alexander said Hallman calculated and planned to murder Brown, Ares and Saunders. He donned a bulletproof vest, packed his car to drive back home and emptied nearly two magazines in his efforts, Alexander said.

But Hallman’s defense attorney, Daniel Karalash, argued his client suffered multiple traumatic brain injuries after playing football. Hallman was unaware of his surroundings due to suffering more than 20 concussions, Karalash said. The defendant played wide receiver at Division I Southeastern Louisiana University.

Jurors are scheduled to return July 8 for the insanity phase of the trial.
