Medley pet shelter will open on weekends due to overpopulation of dogs needing adoption

Miami-Dade Animal Services will open up its Medley shelter on the weekends to help tackle an overpopulation of dogs and has temporarily waived fees to encourage more pet adoptions.

Beginning July 6, the Medley shelter, 7401 NW 74th St., will be open from 1 to 4 p.m. on Saturday and Sundays.

The Medley facility historically has served as an “overflow shelter” to the county’s main animal shelter in Doral, 3599 NW 79th Ave., according to Animal Services spokesperson Flora Beal. When the Doral location reaches capacity, animals are relocated to Medley.

The Medley facility had been open to the public once a month since January. However, it will now be open every weekend to help alleviate the overpopulation crisis.

The Medley facility houses approximately 165 medium to large dogs, while the county’s Doral pet shelter holds nearly 450 dogs. The Doral location is open seven days a week:

Monday-Friday : 10 a.m. to 6:30 p.m.

Saturday-Sunday : 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Animal Services also has waived all dog fees for the next four months. Each dog up for adoption is fully vaccinated, microchipped and sterilized.

If perhaps you’re not ready to be a full-time dog owner but would still like to help, the shelter is also seeking people to foster dogs.
